Did you know what today is? Oh, it is the day of days! It is Sebastian Stan‘s birthday!
In his 36 years on earth, Sebastian Stan has flowered into Hollywood’s favorite “tortured bad boy” actor. We’ve seen him play a tortured young prince on the cult favorite Kings, a tortured assassin/hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and tortured torturer Jeff Gilooly in I, Tonya. But did you remember that time when Sebastian Stan brought his wounded puppy-like charisma to one of the most beloved shows on television?
Sebastian Stan was totally the Mad Hatter on ABC’s long-running Once Upon A Time. And there’s a good chance you forgot about it.
Casual Sebastian Stan fans know him as Bucky Barnes from the Captain America movies, but hardcore Stan, uh, stans will remember him from a myriad of television roles from the last decade. He has been one of TV’s most stalwart scene-stealers, appearing on everything from Gossip Girl to Political Animals. However, maybe the weirdest credit on Stan’s resume was when he played Jefferson, aka the Mad Hatter, on the first two seasons of Once Upon a Time.
Once Upon A Time was a frothy network soap opera set in a fictional town where everyone was secretly a fairy tale character under a spell that made them believe they were normies. Towards the end of the first season, heroine Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) is kidnapped by a well-seeming man who turns out to be the Mad Hatter. In this version of the tale, the Mad Hatter is a forlorn father who needs to enchant a hat to give him the power to travel between worlds. So, he’s a bad guy, but since this is a Sebastian Stan character, he’s a tortured bad guy.
Stan makes the most of the role, imbuing him with layers of sinister menace, roguish charm, and real despondence over the loss of his daughter. All told, it’s a juicy turn from the actor. He tackles the part with sincerity and wonder, and yes, a more than a little bit of campy fun.
You can stream Stan’s appearances in Once Upon A Time on Netflix. He appears in Season 1 episodes “Hat Trick,” “An Apple Red as Blood,” and “A Land Without Magic,” and in Season 2 episodes “We Are Both,” “Lady of the Lake,” and “The Doctor.”
