‘Outlaw King’: Chris Pine Takes On the King of England in Netflix’s Medieval Epic

Film Name: Outlaw King

Release Date: November 9, 2018

Platform: Netflix

Outlaw King Cast: Chris Pine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh, Billy Howle, Tony Curran, Stephen Dillane

Director: David Mackenzie

The Pitch: When Robert the Bruce, the King of Scots, is declared an outlaw by the King of England, the Scotsman declares war on his colonial overlords. Robert doesn’t have the same amount of soldiers or ammunition as the medieval British army, then the strongest in the world, but his ragtag group of men remain dedicated to saving their country. Will their passion be enough to free Scotland from the oppressive rule of King Edward I and his son, the Prince of Wales?

Why We’re Excited: Outlaw King has all the makings of a holiday blockbuster, but you won’t have to leave your couch to enjoy the big-budget epic (although you could: the film hits select theaters on November 9, the same day is debuts on Netflix). The film serves as director David Mackenzie’s follow-up to Hell or High Water, his Best Picture nominee, and despite Chris Pine’s starring roles in both, the two look pretty different. In Outlaw King, Pine plays a disgraced nobleman-turned-hero whose battle style is just as ruthless as his kilt game (he sports casual kilts, war kilts, training kilts, and more in the trailer). Pine really lays it all out for the role, expertly inhabiting the Gladiator-like warrior mentality.

The based-on-a-true-story Outlaw King is slated to open the Toronto International Film Festival in September, which is a pretty solid indication that the film will be a success for Netflix. The platform has had mixed luck with tentpole films (for every Mudbound, there’s a Bright ) but Outlaw King looks like it will be a rollicking good time — and a good film, at that.

Plus, Chris Pine will probably be shirtless at some point, so… need we say more?
