‘The Big Bang Theory’ Is Officially Ending After Season 12

The Big Bang Theory is officially ending after Season 12. The beloved sitcom is leaving CBS with much more than a boatload of awards nominations: it will be making history. The Big Bang Theory will end its run as the longest-running multi-cam series in TV history, a huge milestone for any program. By the time the show ends, in May 2019, it will have aired a record-breaking 279 episodes. That’s not 314, a number Sheldon Cooper would certainly prefer, but it’s still pretty damn impressive.

The twelfth and final season of Big Bang Theory will premiere on Monday, September 24 on CBS before moving to its regular time on Thursday, September 27 — that’s two episodes in one week. Bazinga!

“We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons,” Warner Bros. TV, CBS, and creator Chuck Lorre said in a joint statement. “We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.” CBS has yet to reveal any details about this “epic creative close” but expect a final episode filled with the one-liners, ridiculous science references, and network-approved sexy drama that fans of the show have come to know and love.

Big Bang Theory has received 52 Emmy nominations since the show first premiered in 2007, winning 10 times. While the show has never won for Outstanding Comedy Series (it was nominated four times from 2011 to 2014), Jim Parsons, one of the show’s stars, has taken home four Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmys over the years.

If you’re mourning the loss of Big Bang Theory, don’t fret: the show is syndicated all over cable, so if you turn on your TV and start scrolling, you’re bound to stumble upon an episode. The entire series is also available to stream with a CBS All Access subscription, and you can purchase individual episodes on Amazon Video.
