‘The Great British Bake Off’ Is Officially Coming to Netflix

The Great British Bake Off is officially coming to the U.S., and you have Netflix to thank. Yesterday, the streaming service announced that they have acquired the U.S. rights to three new and future seasons of the ultra-popular British competition series, the first of which is slated to hit Netflix on August 31. The three seasons hitting Netflix will feature Bake Off’s new hosts, Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding, and new judge Prue Leith alongside veteran star Paul Hollywood.

The Great British Bake Off has gone through some major changes in the last few years that have made it difficult for fans in the U.S. to watch the series. In 2016, the show switched from the BBC to Channel 4, and longtime stars Mary Berry, Mel Giedroyc, and Sue Perkins quit amid the hullaballoo. Hollywood was the only judge to remain, and Toksvig, Fielding, and Leith were brought in as replacements. But unfortunately, Bake Off’s original stars weren’t the only thing lost in the switch: PBS, the network airing new episodes in the U.S., was stripped of first run-rights when the series moved to Channel 4. As a result, American viewers missed out on the new stars’ first season, which premiered in 2017.

But now, the Great British Bake Off drought is officially over. For the next two years, at least, Netflix will be the only place to stream Bake Off in the U.S. Season 8, the new hosts’ first season, hits Netflix next week, and Season 9 will hit the platform later this year (it premieres in the U.K. on August 28). Their third season, the final one included in Netflix’s deal, should premiere in the U.S. in late 2019.

If Americans enjoy the series — and all signs point to that happening — it’s possible that Netflix could extend the deal past 2019. Keep your fingers crossed and your pastry dough flaky, Bake Off fans!
