BoJack Spirals Out of Control in the ‘BoJack Horseman’ Season 5 Trailer

BoJack Horseman is officially back, baby. Today, Netflix released the highly-anticipated trailer for Season 5, and it’s filled with angst, dark humor, and weird comic turns. In the new installment, your favorite horse (voiced by Will Arnett) gets a new job, but his career success doesn’t lift much of the existential dread off his shoulders. Would you expect anything less from the funniest (and also saddest) animated comedy on Netflix?

The trailer opens with a shot of BoJack struggling to get out of bed in the morning. “Ugh,” he says as he thinks about the undoubtedly shitty day ahead of him. BoJack explains that he’s starring in a new crime drama, Philbert (it’s the titular role, we imagine Beanie Feldstein saying), but he’s still incredibly unsatisfied. Maybe it’s because the show is “confusing, which means it’s daring and smart,” as Princess Carolyn explains on set? Or maybe it’s because he’s drinking again and his life is slowly unraveling around him. Probably all three, honestly.

BoJack may not be alright in the Season 5 trailer, but he’s certainly trying to get better — in his own way, at least. “I’m not someone therapy works on. I might be too smart,” he says. Clearly, he’s resisting getting professional help, but he still has his friends to lean on. Multiple people ask if he’s okay in the the trailer, and while we don’t see the outcome of those conversations, we’re hopeful that at least one friend is able to get through to him. We’ve seen enough of BoJack pushing people away over the last four seasons; it’s time for him to let someone in, even just a tiny bit.

“This is going to be a sensational season of television,” someone says in the trailer. Sure, he’s likely talking about Philbert, but if the promo is any indication, that statement rings true for BoJack Horseman Season 5, as well.

BoJack Horseman Season 5 hits Netflix on Friday, September 14. Watch the trailer above.
