Thirsty for your next foreign drama obsession? Netflix has begun teasing a brand new Spanish drama called Elite that might be the next big thing. The series takes place in, you guessed it, an elite Spanish school. Three students from the wrong side of the tracks are transferred there after their school was destroyed by an earthquake. Not only will the trio of working class charmers struggle to fit into this glittery dog-eat-dog world, but they will come under suspicion when a classmate is brutally murdered.

Here’s everything you need to know about Netflix’s Elite.

What Is Netflix’s Elite?

Elite is just the latest Netflix Global Original poised to take over your Netflix account. The show was the second Spanish Original series ever ordered by Netflix (after Cable Girls), and back in 2017 it was hyped as a show with a “Montague-Capulet dynamic.”

As mentioned above, the series takes place in a posh Spanish high school called Las Encinas, which Netflix’s press site hypes as “the best and most exclusive school in Spain.” Our three protagonists are working class schlubs who get into the school thanks to a twist of fate. An earthquake takes out their school, and as kids are divided amongst the various schools still standing, they get to go to Las Encinas.

What Will Elite Remind Me Of?

Early teasers suggest the show will have a Gossip Girl-vibe. There’s an emphasis in teasers on school parties, illicit affairs, and high-end fashion. However, Elite comes with a twist: it’s a murder mystery. After our three heroes transfer to Las Encinas, a student winds up dead. Soon everyone comes under suspicion and all sorts of secrets come to light.

So let’s say that Elite is like Gossip Girl meets Riverdale with some Money Heist-like Spanish swagger sprinkled in.

When Is Elite Coming To Netflix?

Elite is set to hit Netflix on October 5. The first season is 8 episodes long. The show was created by Spanish powerhouse producers Carlos Montero and Dario Madrona.

What Is Elite‘s Big Connection To Money Heist, aka La Casa de Papel?

Elite has one major thing in common with Netflix’s smash international hit Money Heist – and it’s not just the fact that it’s a stylist Spanish drama. Elite‘s leading man, Miguel Herrán, is a Money Heist alum. In Money Heist, Herrán plays Rio, the team’s youngest member. He’s a hacker and becomes involved with the show’s heroine Tokyo. Herrán plays Christian in Elite.
