Netflix’s New ‘She-Ra’ Trailer Is Giving Off Serious ‘Sailor Moon’ Vibes

A new take on a classic heroine is preparing for her next adventure. Netflix and DreamWorks have released their first teaser trailer for the upcoming animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. And the savior of Etheria is already looking epic.

Based on the ’80s character of the same name, Netflix’s She-Ra series tells the story of the orphan Adora, a young woman who leaves behind her life in the evil Horde. But when she discovers a magical sword who promises to unlock her destiny, that’s when her life changes permanently. The series follows Adora as she learns to embrace her warrior princess alter ego She-Ra, and you can bet there are going to be all sorts of awesome adventures full of battles and unexpected friendships along the way.

Netflix and DreamWorks released artwork for the upcoming series a while back, but this is the first time we’ve gotten a taste of what the show will be like. And honestly, we’re getting some fantasy-fueled Sailor Moon vibes over here. The teaser follows Adora as she hesitantly talks to the sword that promises to change her destiny — a classic call-to-action. But once she picks up that sword, look out! The transformation from Adora’s everyday clothes into the white-clad and crown-wearing She-Ra feels a bit like another awesome, feminist-leaning show about super-powered young women. The fact that Adora’s costume isn’t sexualized is just a (huge) added bonus.

Executive produced by Noelle Stevenson (Lumberjanes, Nimona) and Chuck Austen (Dawn of the Croods, Steven Universe), She-Ra and the Princesses of Power has a fairly impressive pedigree behind it. Aimee Carrero (Elena of Avalor) voices the role of Adora with actors such as like Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Lorraine Toussaint (Orange Is the New Black), and Vella Lovell (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) rounding out the cast. We expect big things from you, She-Ra. Now hurry up November!

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power premieres on Netflix Friday, November 16.
