‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’: Kiernan Shipka Gets Dark in First Trailer for Netflix’s Horror Drama

Happy birthday to you, Sabrina. Netflix has finally dropped the first teaser for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and the rumors are right: this is certainly not your mother’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The trailer introduces fans to the dark world of Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), and that world is apparently filled with Devil worship, creepy teenagers, and horned beasts. Essentially, it’s Riverdale on steroids.

The trailer opens with a birthday party, and a very important one, at that. As people (are they friends? foes? humans? beasts?) sing “Happy Birthday” to Sabrina, we see flashes of her life — both the innocent and the sinister. You see, now that Sabrina is 16, she must decide whether to make a deal with the Devil and marry into Satan’s family, or to renounce her witchy powers once and for all. As Sabrina chooses between the extraordinary and the entirely ordinary (I mean, her boyfriend Harvey Kinkle is cute, but can he compete with Satan?), she also has to contend with her favorite teacher, who has been possessed by the Devil and turned into Madame Satan. Now that she’s possessed, Mrs. Wardell is interested in much more than just teaching Sabrina algebra — she’s looking to destroy the young witch for good.

Netflix describes the series as “tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist,” but the teaser makes the iconic horror films look like child’s play. Between the creepy rendition of “Happy Birthday,” the zombified teens in lace-collared dresses, the ritualistic chanting, and the worst bath experience in the history of humanity, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina promises to hit practically every horror trope (and make a few of its own along the way). Buckle up, Sabrina fans, because this is going to be one wild ride.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina hits Netflix on Friday, October 26. Watch the promo above.
