Julia Roberts Spirals Into Insanity in Prime Video’s ‘Homecoming’ Trailer

Julia Roberts’ world is shrouded in mystery in the new trailer for Homecoming, Prime Video’s new psychological thriller. The drama follows Heidi Bergman (Roberts), a caseworker at a transitional support center for soldiers returning from active duty, in multiple timelines. The first timeline takes place a few years in the past, during Heidi’s time as a caseworker; the second takes place in the present, when she’s living with her mother (Sissy Spacek) and working as a small-town waitress. What happened to Heidi in the intervening years? Why did she leave the facility, also named Homecoming?

These are the questions Homecoming sets out to answer, and the trailer does a great job of setting them up. The action kickstarts when a Department of Defense auditor (Shea Whigham) visits Heidi at her mother’s house and begins asking her questions about her role at Homecoming, why she left, and the soldiers she worked with. “What were your duties there?” he asks. “I don’t know,” says Heidi. As the auditor continues to investigate, Heidi realizes that the story she’s been telling herself for years may not be true. “Have you ever forgotten something? Something big?” she says.

Heidi may seem more put-together in the previous timeline, but the trailer makes it clear that her grip on reality is just as tenuous in the past. “We’re here to help them,” her voiceover says at multiple times in the trailer. The more she says it, the more we doubt it. Everyone at Homecoming seems to think that they have total freedom — Walter Cruz (Stephan James), a newly-returned soldier, even says, “We can leave whenever we want” — but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Both the soldiers and Heidi are trapped by the questionable motives of Homecoming’s execs, many of whom see the facility as a social experiment, not a rehab center.

Homecoming promises to be one of the most exciting shows of the fall, so be sure not to miss it when it hits Prime Video on November 2.
