Regina King Won Her Third Emmy for a Cancelled Netflix Show

Last night Regina King took home the much-deserved Emmy award for Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series. But there’s an interesting asterisk attached to King’s win. The American Crime and The Leftovers actress won her latest award for one of the very few one-season shows Netflix has cancelled, Seven Seconds.

Netflix produces so much content that whenever the streaming service cancels a show or movie, it’s remarkable. It’s rare for anything to be officially cancelled, but it’s even rarer for Netflix to cancel a show without giving it at least two seasons. Even the cringe-worthy Real Rob has seen the light of additional episodes. To date there are only eight Netflix originals that have been officially cancelled after one season, and Seven Seconds is one of them. That, and not King’s stellar performance, is partially what makes this win so surprising.

Seven Seconds was originally supposed to be an ongoing dramatic series for Netflix. But in April of 2018 this crime drama about a tragic death and the underlying racial tension it fuels was cancelled. Netflix never gave a statement as to why the series was axed. But because it rated fairly well with critics, some believe that viewership numbers were to blame.

So how did it win an Emmy? After the cancellation Netflix submitted the series as a limited series, though it was never originally meant to be a stand-alone show. And thus Regina King earned another Emmy to add to her growing collection. Meanwhile we’ll never get to see a second season of the show that earned her that glorious award.
