Last night was the biggest night of television. So one would expect that two of the biggest series on TV would show up in full force, right? Wrong. That’s not how the Emmys does things. NBC’s This Is Us and Netflix’s Stranger Things weren’t completely cut from the night’s events, but they were far from the highlight of the night.
Streaming was the big winner of the night, with Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel taking home the Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The rest of the night followed the same patterns the Emmys love. Game of Thrones won some of the biggest drama awards of the night. A Ryan Murphy series swept the Limited Series category. SNL and Lorne Michaels grabbed some more awards. But more importantly how did two of the most popular shows of the year stack up? Here’s where two of this year’s most beloved shows ranked among the awards madness.
Did This Is Us win any Emmys?
Grab your handkerchief, This Is Us fans. You have a whole new reason to cry. NBC’s deeply sad series was nominated for three major Emmys this year — Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia each for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and This Is Us itself for Outstanding Drama Series. NBC lost all three awards.
Outstanding Lead Actor instead went to The Americans‘ Matthew Rhys, and Outstanding Drama went to HBO’s Game of Thrones. Who saw that coming?
But all hope is not lost. This Is Us did win a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy earlier this year, so it still is technically a 2018 Emmy winner. Ron Cephas Jones won for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
Did Stranger Things win any Emmys?
The Duffer brothers’ creepy and ’80s-inspired drama fared pretty well during Emmy nominations season. Stranger Things was nominated for 12 Emmys altogether. But unfortunately Eleven and her crew didn’t get to take home anything last night.

Stranger Things was nominated for five major Emmys including Outstanding Drama Series. Additionally David Harbor was nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, Millie Bobby Brown was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series, and the Duffer brothers were nominated for both a writing and directing award. But we know how this awards song goes. Game of Thrones took home drama’s highest honor of the night. The Americans Matthew Rhys and The Crown‘s Claire Foy respectively took home the drama category’s highest acting awards. And The Crown‘s Stephen Daldry took the Emmy for Outstanding Directing, while The Americans‘ Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg took the Outstanding Writing Emmy.
But Stranger Things didn’t strike out on all 12 of its Emmy noms. During the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this year, the series won the award for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series. Hey in this packed TV landscape, a win for your favorite show is a win for your favorite show.
