If the results of the 2018 Emmy Awards — where The Handmaid’s Tale didn’t pick up a single major award after winning five big ones, including Outstanding Drama last year — weren’t deflating enough for Hulu, today’s news is a bigger blow. Reed Morano, who won one of those Emmys last year, for directing the Handmaid’s Tale pilot, just signed an overall deal with Amazon Studios, where she will work exclusively to create new original series for Amazon Prime.
This news marks a major poaching of talent and could end up being a huge loss of opportunity for Hulu is Morano’s Amazon series ends up being a hit. Morano didn’t direct any episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale season 2.
Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke had nothing but big praise for Morano in her statement: “Reed is a creative powerhouse whose distinct point of view shines through her immersive, emotional storytelling and commanding cinematic style,” Salke said. “We’re honored to partner with her to exclusively create originals for the global Prime Video audience.”
Amazon’s deal with Morano puts her in great company in Amazon’s ever-more-accomplished stable of talent. Already they have the upcoming series Homecoming from director Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) and starring Julia Roberts, as well as The Romanoffs from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner and the upcoming Underground Railroad series from Barry Jenkins.
