American Horror Story: Apocalypse

There’s a lot of iconic imagery in the twisted world of American Horror Story, but few things are as memorable as that gimp suit. Also known as the “Rubber Man,” the gimp suit first appeared in Murder House and its been haunting our nightmares ever since. But the Rubber Man’s return in AHS: Apocalypse may be one of the most unsettling, invasive, and oddly steamy moves this show has ever pulled. American Horror Story: Apocalypse Episode 2 spoilers ahead, not to mention some VERY graphic images.

The appropriately titled “The Morning After” follows the desperate citizens of Outpost 3 after the arrival of Michael Langdon (Cody Fern). Langdon, who is definitely the Antichrist though no one in the outpost knows that yet, claims that he’s a member of the Cooperative that runs the Outposts. Supplies are running low. To ensure humanity survives, Langdon tells everyone he will be meeting with them one-on-one to evaluate whether or not they’re worthy of being saved.

Up first is Evan Peters‘ Mr. Gallant, an eccentric hair stylist who’s the grandson of Evie (Joan Collins). Right away things get heated between Gallant and the bringer of evil.

So when a man in a gimp suit appears in Gallant’s doorway later in the night, he knows what’s up.

Assuming the man is Langdon, the two get down and dirty in a way that makes Gallant’s grandmother (and probably FX’s censors) blush:

Pretty sexy, right? Absolutely, especially since Cody Fern makes one hell of a flowing-haired Antichrist. But this is American Horror Story we’re talking about, a show that never allows for nice things and delights in whatever disturbing ideas are running through Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s minds. Of course this doesn’t end well.

It turns out that wasn’t Langdon in the gimp suit after all, meaning Gallant had no idea who he was sleeping with. That’s rape, making the whole sexiness of the scene fall somewhere between shocking and cringe-worthy — AHS‘ favorite place to live.

Adding to this confusion, when the Rubber Man reappears again, Gallant stabs him to death. That’s when the Rubber Man immediately turns into his cruelly homophobic grandmother Evie. Oh, and at one point Langdon tells Gallant he wouldn’t sleep with him even if he was the last man on earth. That blow isn’t really horrific during the apocalypse, but it is incredibly cruel.

Murder House fans already know that Michael Langdon is the antichrist, so that probably has something to do with how the switcharoo happened. Ever since Langdon appeared things have gotten strange. Snakes have been appearing only to be chopped up and reform minutes later. One would think being the antichrist would come with certain superpowers, including casting illusions. And Langdon seems to have them all.

That leaves the Rubber Man. Though a gimp suit has been featured in three AHS seasons so far (Murder House, Cult, and now Apocalypse), there’s only one character who is KNOWN for wearing a gimp suit. That would be Murder House’s Tate Langdon, aka Season 1’s creepily charming school shooter ghost, aka Michael Langdon’s father, aka the first AHS character Evan Peters ever played.

Yep. That’s right. There’s a very real chance that Evan Peters just raped Evan Peters. Just a reminder, we’re in Apocalypse’s second episode.
