The weekend is finally here, and you know what that means: it’s time to party like it’s 1998. Just kidding, it’s time to watch TV until Monday morning. This weekend, a new batch of amazing shows and movies are hitting Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and HBO, so there’s really no reason why you should even step outside. No one likes early fall weather anyway, right? (Okay, it’s actually not that bad).
Today, Netflix is premiering one of the most highly-anticipated limited series of the year. Maniac stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill as participants in an experimental drug trial who form a unique bond. The series has received widespread acclaim (the star power of its leads certainly doesn’t hurt), so if you’re going to watch one thing this weekend, it should probably be Maniac. In the mood for something a little lighter? Don’t miss The Good Cop, a new Netflix series starring Tony Danza and Josh Groban. The comedy hits every police procedural cliche in the book — you’ve got the buddy cop thing, the “Good Cop, Bad Cop thing,” etc. — but it does so in an innovative, creative way. Oh, and did we mention it’s funny? The Good Cop‘s got jokes, y’all!
If you’re more interested in a cinematic one-and-done than a binge-watch, check out Best Picture winner The Shape of Water, which hits HBO on Saturday. The Shape of Water stood out from its fellow Oscars contenders for its fishy love story and sci-fi homages, but it’s absolutely perfect for home viewing, especially if you like watching women have sex with gilled creatures.
Curious what else is hitting your favorite platforms? Here’s what’s new on streaming this weekend.
Maniac
She’s a Maniac, Maniac, oh, oh, oh. Netflix’s psychological drama is many things, but simple, it is not. The limited series tells the story of Owen (Jonah Hill) and Annie (Emma Stone), two mentally ill twenty-somethings who enter an experimental drug trial in an attempt to cure there problems. As Owen and Annie live out a series of convoluted, computer-generated fantasies, their bond grows, even as they begin to question the reality of everything around them. All 10 episodes are directed by superstar Cary Fukunaga, who helps turn an already-riveting drama into a fantastical descent into madness.
The Good Cop: Season 1
The Good Cop stars Tony Danza and Josh Groban as a father-son police duo tasked with fighting crime in New York City. Tony Caruso, Sr. (Danza) is a former NYPD cop who just completed a stint in prison for corruption. When he moves in with his son, Tony Caruso, Jr. (Groban), a rule-following police officer with a strict moral code, the two butt heads, but they soon put their differences aside to solve various cases. As our Lea Palmieri puts it, The Good Cop‘s light, inoffensive humor will make it “your new favorite show to watch with your parents.”

The Shape of Water
Last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner follows a lonely, mute janitor at a high-security government facility who discovers an amphibious creature living in captivity. As Elisa (Sally Hawkins) begins spending time with the creature, they fall in love, and she decides that breaking him out of the facility is the only way to keep him alive. The Shape of Water prompts viewers to question what it means to love, but it also asks viewers to think about how, psychically, a woman could have sex with a fish. These are very important questions, and you have director Guillermo del Toro to thank for that.
