The Handmaid’s Tale may have been snubbed at the Emmys, but that hasn’t stopped some fans from getting into the Halloween spirit. This week, online lingerie and adult costume store Yandy added a “Brave Red Maiden” costume to their Halloween offerings in a clear homage to The Handmaid’s Tale. It goes without saying that people were upset. The social media outrage prompted Yandy to remove the costume form their site and issue a public apology for supporting a “symbol of women’s oppression.”
Yandy.com’s sexy Handmaid’s Tale costume features the show’s signature red cape, dress (this time, it’s a much shorter version), and white bonnet. “An upsetting dystopian future has emerged where women no longer have a say,” the description under the photos read. “However, we say be bold and speak your mind in this exclusive Brave Red Maiden costume.” Ah, yes, the women of The Handmaid’s Tale have so many opportunities to be bold and speak their minds.
After discovering the costume, fans vented their anger on Twitter. One user posted a screenshot of the costume and questioned Yandy’s decision, saying, “Nothing like a sexy rape victim for Halloween fun.” Another said, “Our society doesn’t take the rape of real women seriously, why should they take the rape of fictional women seriously?”
Yandy took the criticism to heart and removed the costume from its site. “Over the last few hours, it has become obvious that our ‘Yandy Brave Red Maiden Costume’ is being seen as a symbol of women’s oppression, rather than an expression of women’s empowerment,” the company said in a statement. “This is unfortunate, as it was not our intention on any level.”
You may not be able to buy a Brave Red Maiden costume anymore, but if you’re still jonesing for a sexy Handmaid’s Tale costume, all hope is not lost: simply take a page out of Kim Kardashian’s book and make your own.
