How ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Star Ming-Na Wen Turned Evil for ‘Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors’ [Exclusive]

Every great hero needs a good villain. But sometimes, it takes a really great hero to make a great villain, and that’s what Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Ming-Na Wen is bringing to her role as Hala in the new animated Disney movie, Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors.

“I love playing a villain, because it’s juicy, you know?” Wen says in our exclusive behind the scenes look at the upcoming movie, which you can watch above. “You get to be evil, and you get to delve into your darker side.”

Marvel Rising is a brand new franchise for the studio, taking some relatively lesser known characters that aim to appeal to a slightly younger, more diverse, and more inclusive audience. It’s also a bit of an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. reunion as Chloe Bennet reprises her role of Quake on the show, and Dove Cameron — who played a villain on the last season of S.H.I.E.L.D. — takes the lead as Ghost-Spider, an alternate universe version of Spider-Man (sort of… It’s complicated). Also in the cast are Kamil McFadden as Patriot, Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl, Kathreen Khavari as Ms. Marvel, Dee Bradley Baker as Tippy Toe, Skai Jackson as Gloria Grant, and Steven Weber as Captain George Stacy.

After teasing the line of cartoons, books, and toys with a six-part series of shorts, Marvel Rising will officially launch with the 80 minute long Secret Warriors movie, which will premiere on Disney Channel and Disney XD simultaneously on Sunday, September 30 at 10/9c.

Beyond the heroes, you’ll also get to meet Wen’s villain, a Kree accuser. Think Ronan (Lee Pace) from Guardians of the Galaxy, and you’ve got the general idea.

“She is strong, and powerful,” Wen notes. “Her whole persona is that she thinks she’s doing good. She considers herself a nurturer, which is really, really ironic.”

That’s in addition to super human strength, and accelerated healing, which should cause trouble for our new group of heroes. One thing that Hala doesn’t have, though?

“I wish they could incorporate an evil laugh,” Wen says, before hilariously demonstrating her take. “Who doesn’t want to do that?”
