Netflix Unveils ‘Making a Murderer’ Part 2 Details, Release Date

Almost three years after Making a Murderer first hit Netflix, the cult docu-series is finally returning to our screens. Today, Netflix announced that the 10-episode second season, which is being billed as “Part 2,” will debut globally on October 19. Making a Murderer Part 2 will reunite viewers with Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, both of whom were convicted of Theresa Halbach’s murder in 2007, and will focus on their ongoing legal appeals. According to Netflix, the new episodes will provide “an in-depth look at the high-stakes post-conviction process, exploring the emotional toll the process takes on all involved.”

While filming Making a Murderer Part 2, executive producers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos had “exclusive access” to Avery and Dassey. “Steven and Brendan, their families, and their legal and investigative teams have once again graciously granted us access, giving us a window into the complex web of American criminal justice,” said Ricciardi and Demos. “Building on Part 1, which documented the experience of the accused, in Part 2, we have chronicled the experience of the convicted and imprisoned, two men each serving life sentences for crimes they maintain they did not commit.  We are thrilled to be able to share this new phase of the journey with viewers.”

Viewers will meet a few new faces in Part 2. The new installment will feature Kathleen Zellner, Avery’s post-conviction lawyer, as she fights to win the Wisconsin native’s freedom. According to Netflix, Zellner has “righted more wrongful convictions than any private attorney in America,” and Part 2 follows her as she “tirelessly works the case and uncovers unexpected  evidence about what may have happened to Teresa Halbach and about how and why the jury convicted Steven of her murder.” Making a Murderer Part 2 will also introduce viewers to Dassey’s lawyers, Laura Nirider and Steven Drizin, who work with Northwestern University’s Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth.

Netflix is giving away a lot of information, but it’s safe to assume that fans will still be in for a few surprises when Making a Murderer Part 2 debuts on Friday, October 19.
