‘Single Parents’ Invites Taran Killam Into The Great TV Dads Club

Former Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam is joining a very exclusive club this week, and he might not even know it. But with the premiere of Single Parents on ABC, where he stars in the sitcom as, no lies here, a single parent, Killam is inducting himself into the Great TV Dads Club.

Tim Allen and Bob Saget are likely welcoming him into the group, as fellow actors who millions of viewers have grown up watching as TV dads. As Will Cooper on Single Parents, Killam immediately has the TV dad thing locked down. He’s a great guy but he’s goofy, he’s eager and he’s earnest, and he’s funny and fatherly all in one. While we all could’ve watched him dance around to French songs on SNL for decades to come, his career is now making not only an accurate but delightful natural progression to sitcom dad.

Single Parents should not just be applauded for creating one of this season’s best new ensembles, and for giving comedy queen Leighton Meester another opportunity to shine, but for also setting the path for Killam’s next career moves. Will is the kind of TV dad we can’t help but love. You know the kind: clueless about all things outside of parenting (including but not limited to dating, fashion, and friendship) but sweet, and able to deliver just as many feelings as he does physical comedy. We’re rooting for him while we’re also completely embarrassed by him. Perhaps Killam’s even taken notes from his own life and fellow school dads for the role, as he is the father of two children with his wife, actress Cobie Smulders.

Killam’s fully jumped into the role, proving he’s just as good on screen with the fellow single parents that roll their eyes at him and his never-ending energy as he is with the child actors. It’s clear we’ve got a Phil Dunphy in the making here, whether Single Parents lasts as long as Modern Family or not. The fun sitcom dad is a perfect fit for Killam’s abilities and he does a good job leading, annoying, and charming his new group of pals on the ABC series. He should get used to it, as surely this may be the first, but it’s definitely not the last TV show that will feature him so expertly rocking a mermaid purse.
