Julie Swetnick, the third woman to come forward with allegations of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, has spoken publicly for the first time. In an exclusive interview with Showtime’s docu-series The Circus, Swetnick discussed the allegation and insisted that Kavanaugh does not “belong on the Supreme Court.”

When asked by host John Heilemann why she came forward with her claim right before the Kavanaugh’s nomination hearings, Swetnick said that this was not her intention. “Well, it wasn’t that I wanted to come out one day before the hearings. Circumstances brought it out that way,” she said. “This is something that occurred a long time ago, and it’s not that I just thought about it. It’s been on my mind ever since the occurrence.”

Earlier this week, Swetnick, with the help of her lawyer Michael Avenatti, claimed that she was at multiple parties with Kavanaugh in the early 1980s. While Swetnick does not allege that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her, she claims that he was present at a party where she was gang raped after her drink was drugged. During that time period, she says, Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge were part of a group of boys who spiked drinks in order to take advantage of teenage girls at parties.

Kavanaugh has denied Swetnick’s allegations, saying that her claim is “ridiculous and from the Twilight Zone. I don’t know who this is and this never happened.”

Swetnick told Heilemann, “Brett Kavanaugh is going for a seat where he’s going to have that seat on the Supreme Court for the rest of his life. And if he’s going to have that seat legitimately, all of these things should be investigated. Because, from what I’ve experienced first hand, I don’t think he belongs on the Supreme Court.” According to Swetnick, the only way for this process to be “just” is to investigate her claim and those put forth by multiple other women. “I want the American people to have those facts and judge for themselves,” she said.

Swetnick then said that she hopes the sexual assault allegations Kavanaugh is facing disqualify him from joining the highest court in the land. “That’s not the type of behavior that anybody at any age should do. I don’t think women should be treated that way. And I don’t think that any human being should treat people that way,” she said.
