Wouldst that thou were watching the brand new adaptation of King Lear right now? Nay, but thou canst stream it.

The brand new BBC adaptation of King Lear, starring Anthony Hopkins as Lear, Emma Thompson as Goneril, and rising star Florence Pugh as Cordelia, has finally hit the United States. The two hour film breezes through the play’s slower moments and reframes the story as a viscerally familiar tale for today’s tense political climate. Families are torn apart over power struggles, and fathers struggle to keep hold of their children.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new King Lear.

Who’s Who In The King Lear Cast?

As previously mentioned, Anthony Hopkins is playing King Lear in this new adaptation, and the rest of the cast is stacked. Emma Thompson is Goneril, Emily Watson is Regan, and Florence Pugh is Cordelia.

Veteran character actor Jim Broadbent plays the Earl of Gloucester, Andrew Scott (aka Moriarty in Sherlock) is Edgar, and relative newcomer John Macmillan is Gloucester’s bastard son Edmund.

Other noteworthy actors in the cast include Jim Carter (Downton Abbey) as Kent, Tobias Menzies (Outlander, The Terror) as Cornwall, and a mercurial Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) as Oswald. It’s worth noting that Menzies almost steals the show with a really robust take on Regan’s ambitious husband and that Eccleston brings a lot of jazz to Oswald, a manservant part that’s usually brushed off.
