‘Jeopardy’ Contestant Answers Final Jeopardy with a Meme — And Wins

Winning Jeopardy requires a vast knowledge set, some math skills, and… a sense of humor? While the first two traits are generally on display each evening, contestant Erik Agard relied on the third to win Final Jeopardy Monday night. After coming into Final Jeopardy with a healthy lead, Agard was stumped by the question, and he decided to write in a meme rather than hazard a real guess. No matter the question, “What is you doing baby?” is probably not the correct answer, but it sure is funny.

Reigning Jeopardy champion Agard entered the final round with a huge lead over his opponents (he had $15,800 to play with, while Joanna Rom had $3,600 and Mike Jenkins had $1,200). But unfortunately, he didn’t know the answer to “In a hint of the future, in 1973 Marjorie Post gave it to the U.S. Govt. as a warm-weather presidential retreat, but it was returned.” After Jenkins didn’t guess at all and Rom correctly answered “Mar-a-Lago,” Agard’s lead was entirely dependent upon his answer and his betting skills. The Afro-d contestant smiled as he waited for his answer to pop up on the screen.

And then, it happened. In scrawled handwriting, an answer inspired by a popular meme: “What is you doing baby?” Host Alex Trebek was stumped at first, but he quickly realized that it would probably just be better to play along. “What is you doing baby? Well, I’m responding incorrectly. And I’m going to lose $1,000,” said Trebek as Agard’s wager emerged.

Despite his meme-tastic (albeit incorrect) response, Agard ended up winning Jeopardy with $14,800. Rom placed second, taking home $2,000, while Jenkins earned $1,000 for his efforts. The win pushed Agard to a two-day total of $40,001, which is pretty impressive for a Jeopardy contestant. But who really cares about money? When all was said and done, Agard went home with the real prize: bragging rights and an assurance that he’s made Dee (as in, Deez Nuts) proud.
