We May Know How Rick Dies on ‘The Walking Dead’

We’ve known for a while now that Andrew Lincoln would be leaving AMC’s The Walking Dead this season. And the network even went so far as to inform viewers that the actor had two episodes left after the October 21 airing. So you might have thought we had a little more time with Rick Grimes. At least according to the end of tonight’s new episode, “The Obliged”… Well, you might be wrong.

Spoilers for The Walking Dead past this point.

After spending the majority of the episode stuck in a literal hole with Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), Rick climbed out in order to steer a herd of zombies away from the burgeoning civilization he and the rest of the group have built over the past few years. A quick montage shows Daryl riding on his bike, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) riding a horse past some walkers Michonne (Danai Gurira) has killed, and then Rick leading the herd.

Simple enough, right? The heroes of TWD have steered massive herds of zombies before, and it seems to be no problem for Rick. At least, until he turns around a bend in the road, only to encounter another herd.

Rick’s horse freaks out, unsure what direction to go in, and tosses Mr. Grimes right on top of some broken concrete, with rebar sticking out of it. Naturally, he gets seemingly impaled  through the side on the torn rebar. We leave him there, lying on the concrete nearly unconscious, two herds approaching, and no help in sight.

Not great, Bob!

That said, there’s still at least one more hour to spend with Rick, so what’s going on? Is this really how the guy who kicked off the whole series is going to go out? It’s certainly possible that someone could swoop in at the last second. Or he could be rescued and die later from his wounds. Or get bitten by a zombie, rescued, and die later from that. OR. He could get rescued, heal from his wounds, and then an anvil falls on him. Or a piano.

Honestly at this point anything could happen. But more likely, this is what leads to Rick’s death. I’d be shocked if we don’t get a number of flashbacks and dream sequences next episode as the former sheriff lies there, waiting to be eaten; moments that pay tribute to his long history with the show. And at the end of the hour, he ends up leaving the series how he entered it: alone.

We’ll know for sure (probably) either way, next week.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
