‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Episode 6 Recap: No More Mr. Nice Uncle Jesse

We’re back in Greendale, and it’s safe to say that Susie’s Uncle Jesse is not feeling quite himself these days. Previously on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, we learned that Jesse saw something in the mines, got sick, and hasn’t been the same, in such a way that inspires horrified glances and involves occasional frothing at the mouth and choking of Harveys.

Now, even though Jesse is supposedly bound to his bed frame, surely the gentle treatment the doctor prescribed, he’s popping up in all of Sabrina’s pals’ homes, menacingly spouting rude nonsense and then disappearing. It’s the ultimate neg: Harvey is doodling skulls in his room, a typical Tuesday, and Jesse roars “YOU ARE GUTLESS, BOY, YOU ARE FULL OF FEAR AND YOU WILL DIE FOR IT.” Harsh, Gretch. Poor Roz is trying to get a nighttime glass of milk, but is scared into dropping the jug, which turns into maggots, PS, when Jesse says that she will go blind for her lack of faith. Susie is told she is “AN ABOMINATION, GIRL-BOY!” She checks Jesse’s room, and he’s still tied up.

SABRINA DEMON HEAD

Elsewhere, Sabrina tells Ambrose that she can “add Ms. Wardwell to the list of liars and betrayers in my life” after Wardwell tells her a sob story about Sabrina’s father asking her to keep an eye on Sabrina if anything ever happened to him. It’s like a romance novel mad-lib: She was excommunicated from her coven for loving a mortal! Dad Spellman took her in! She was in love with him! You wouldn’t understand! Sabrina is not d, to say the least. Ambrose offers to make all of her teeth fall out, and I immediately want an Ambrose-led DIY voodoo doll YouTube tutorial, please and thank you.

Back at school, the scoobies try and tell Sabrina about Jesse’s demonic antics and she tries to gaslight them, saying that all the talk about eating souls and such is nonsense. In a panic, she runs to her aunts, where Hilda is making what appears to be a truckload of lemon curd and the following conversation takes place: “How was school, love?” “Fine, but Susie’s Uncle Jesse has been possessed by a demon.” So, the usual. As it turns out, all of the scoobies are at risk of possession, since they touched the guy, like some kind of demonic herpes, but just a quick rinse in blessed water from the Sea of Galilee will clear that up.

A great thing about this show is that when questions are asked, very frank answers tend to be given. So when Sabrina uses astral projection to check out Jesse’s room and asks the demon possessing him what he wants, he says, “Spoil, debase and corrupt humans, starting with this vessel.” Oh, is that all? He vomits demon acid at Sabrina, who is also briefly possessed, until she’s saved by Ambrose.

SABINA POSSESSED

Now all in on Operation: Demons Out, Sabrina convinces Harvey to take her to the mines to poke around, despite his concerns that she will 1. Break her ankle or 2. Get eaten by a demon. They find a broken sealing stone and do a little more smooching than one would expect for traumatic hell mines, but everyone has their thing, right?

The Jesse thing is really getting to Susie as her father discusses what to do with a doctor. He mentions that Jesse’s “always had his demons,” aka he was caught wearing a dress once. The doctor recommends that he’s sent to a home.

Sabrina continues to investigate Apophis, the demon whose name she now knows. Blackwood tells her that he’s also known as the Devouring Worm and will kill his host soon and move onto someone else who’s touched him — one of the scoobies, probably. Evil Wardwell, meanwhile, just so happens to have a rite of exorcism — a big no-no for witches — that her father wrote. Zelda is unhappy with this idea, but Hilda’s like, hey, I’m excommunicated, what do I have to lose! Sabrina, Hilda and Wardwell, in a full Exorcist visual reference, enter the Putnam house to cast out some demons and kick some ass.

SABRINA EXORCIST

The demon taunts him when they call him by name, waging psychological warfare as they start the ritual, which invokes the power of fallen witches like Hecate, Anne Boleyn, Luna and Tituba. He’s vomiting blood, and sizzling with holy water, but it’s not enough. Suddenly, Zelda bursts in and joins the chant, invoking the names of past Spellmans, and someone starts chopping onions in my apartment at the exact moment, so odd. A big gnarly worm bursts out of Jesse and thumps onto the floorboards, and the witches throw it down a well with the sealing stone, which should be enough to subdue it. Meanwhile, Zelda grounds Sabrina, “a mortal punishment for interfering in mortal affairs.”

Back at the homestead, Blackwood is waiting and he knows about the forbidden exorcism. He wants to excommunicate them, but Zelda has a trump card — two, actually. Lady Blackwood, who visited in a panic earlier and was told that “carrying a child of night to term should be the most joyous 13 months of a witch’s life,” an actual spit-take line, is having twins, and Zelda has been tasked with being her midwife. “Unless, of course, I’m unworthy.” Please note that Zelda earlier this episode accused Sabrina of being dramatic.

Jesse, of course, dies, but we see in a flashback that Evil Wardwell came back and killed him. She monologues that Sabrina had to perform an exorcism on a mortal to fulfil a prophecy, and the aftermath will be “absolutely apocalyptic.” Muahahaha [thunder crash].

Oh, and Hilda got a job at Dr. Cerberus’ as a barista. Her duties include dressing up as the Bride of Frankenstein, having low-key seggggsual chemistry with Dr. C, and slipping a lil bit of love potion into Ambrose’s love interest Luke’s latte. You know what they say: Leave a Spellman hanging, be forced into loving them forever. Take the easy path, Luke!

Stay tuned to find out what ominous sound effects we’ll hear next on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina!
