Over the weekend Netflix unveiled a shiny new addition to The Great British Baking Show library. It’s a single season of the show called The Great British Baking Show: The Beginnings, and while Netflix is branding it as a new Original, it’s not quite new to hardcore fans. It’s actually the old season that PBS aired this summer. It’s just the latest move that Netflix has made in their quest to own all things Great British Baking Show. Let us explain…
The Great British Baking Show debuted on the BBC back in 2010. There it’s known as The Great British Bake-Off (a name they can’t use here because Pillsbury owns the phrase “Bake-Off” in America). The BBC had a deal with the show’s production company, Love Productions, for seven years. During that time, the show became a massive international hit, finding a cult audience stateside on PBS and Netflix. Love Productions decided to break with the BBC and the last two seasons have been aired on Channel 4 in the UK, with exclusive streaming rights on Netflix. The first of these seasons debuted on Netflix last month and the next will hit the streaming service this Friday. These are the episodes with Prue Leith, Noel Fielding, and Sandi Toksvig. After that, Netflix is also bringing American viewers a 2-episode holiday special later this year. The streaming service also has plans to debut a new season next fall and more holiday specials in 2019 and 2020.
Overwhelmed? It’s okay. For years, The Great British Baking Show has been something to be savored by Americans. We’ve only gotten a few seasons and those episodes landed well after they premiered in the UK. Now Netflix is cutting that lag time down and doing its best to give us every single episode of the show there is. (Though, there is still no word on the first two seasons of the series or any of the charity specials. I quibble.) So feel free to binge through these “new” episodes! More are on their way, and some of them will be hitting the service sooner than you expect.
