Woman Crush Wednesday: Tika Sumpter Is A Cinematic Powerhouse

Your favorite time of the week is back once again. It’s Woman Crush Wednesday! So sit back and relax because it’s time to celebrate this week’s girl crush, Tika Sumpter.

WHO’S THAT GAL: Tika Sumpter

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: This woman is truly a powerhouse when it comes to acting on the silver screen. The Queens native has rocked all throughout her acting career but she’s serving something extra special this time around. 2018 is this actress’ biggest year yet and we couldn’t be happier. Just recently, her first romantic comedy hit theaters, Nobody’s Fool, and she’s a pure delight to watch. Sumpter’s type-A character Danica has her life together down to the last second, or so it seems, until her sister (Tiffany Haddish) is released from jail. And let me tell you, there is never a dull moment in that movie.

Sumpter also shines in The Old Man & The Gun, David Lowrey’s latest film about the true life story of career criminal Forest Tucker. She plays Maureen Hunt, wife of Detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck) and the glue that holds her family together. This role is absolutely nothing like her Nobody’s Fool counterpart, but Sumpter plays both realistically with complete ease, the true sign of a great actress.

While 2019 isn’t too far away from now, we’re totally psyched to see what Sumpter’s got coming our way.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Right now, you can catch Sumpter in not one, but two big screen flicks. She stars in the Tyler Perry comedy, Nobody’s Fool, as well as David Lowrey’s The Old Man & the Gun.

If you’re not super familiar with these movies, don’t worry because Sumpter has been all over your TV screen one way or another. In the mid-2000s, she made her soap opera debut as Layla in One Life to Live. And she even appears as Chuck Bass’ love interest Raina Thorpe, in Gossip Girl. She also stars in the buddy cop films Ride Along and Ride Along 2, beside Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. In 2016, Sumpter also played the role of the young Michelle Obama in the film Southside With You, the biopic about the former president and first lady’s budding romance.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN:  In addition to her appearances in the first two films of the Ride Along series, Sumpter will surely be back for the third installment, Ride Along 3. Plus, catch her as Cassey MacNamara in The Nomads, set to hit theaters in 2019. Sumpter is also set to star as Mrs. Wachowski in the live action Sonic the Hedgehog.
