Watch ‘The Voice’s Moving Tribute to Late Season 1 Contestant Beverly McClellan

On Tuesday night, The Voice set aside a few minutes to pay tribute to Beverly McClellan, fan-favorite Season 1 contestant who passed away on October 30 from endometrial cancer. The segment was deeply moving for die-hard fans and casual viewers alike, and it gave fans a chance to remember some of McClellan’s most memorable performances on The Voice, including a powerful rendition of Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m The Only One.” Back in 2011, McClellan stunned the judges with her vocal range, and, as part of Team Xtina, she made it all the way to the final four in the first-ever Voice finale.

“We want to remember a very special person in The Voice family,” said host Carson Daly before the first commercial break. “Finalist Beverly McClellan blew us away with her powerful voice on our first season of the show. Unfortunately, Beverly lost her battle with cancer — a brave battle, at that — just two weeks ago. We want to take a second to remember her infections spirit and her undeniable talent. Beverly, we love you so much.” The show then played a clip of McClellan’s “I’m The Only One” performance, which, at the time, earned her a standing ovation from the audience.

McClellan was a far cry from the pop star hopefuls that The View has been churning out for the past few years. At the time of her audition, the Tennessee native had already released five independent albums that showcased her unique brand of soulful rock and roll. In addition to her prior experience, McClellan didn’t look the part of the future pop star: a 40-year-old out lesbian, the singer had a shaved head, multiple tattoos, and preferred to wear kilts on stage. “People, they’re not always what they look like. It’s not what they look like; it’s what’s inside,” the star told Yahoo after leaving The Voice. “And I think America got that loud and clear when it came to me. I just stayed true to me, and that meant everything.”
