‘Jack And Jill’ Is The Best Thanksgiving Movie, According To Google … What?!?

There’s no shortage of classic Christmas movies. Looking for heart and humor? You got Home Alone and Elf. In the market for a sentimental reminder of the holiday spirit? You can’t go wrong with It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas StoryLove Actually, National Lampoon’s Christmas, the ever divisive Die Hard, pop culture’s replete with iconic films that celebrate the splendor of the Christmas season. But what about Thanksgiving?

Compared to Christmas, there are minimal options when it comes to finding a universally-adored Thanksgiving movie. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving are the closest we have to reaching seasonal classic status. Sure, there are a medley of other films that take place around Thanksgiving, but the holiday doesn’t inspire the same type of cinematic gravitas as Christmas.

For instance, when you type “Christmas movies” into Google, you’re met with a host of familiar titles — The Grinch, Home Alone, Elf, Love Actually, The Nightmare Before Christmas — but look what happens when you enter the term “Thanksgiving Movies” into Google:

Adam Sandler’s 2011 “comedy” Jack and Jill? No. Absolutely not. Shame on you, Google. I feel so betrayed. Google’s the nonjudgemental friend I turn to when I’m in need of guidance; the website I visit daily to make sure I spell the word conscience correctly. Spoiler alert: I never do! And I gotta tell ya, it really weighs on my… mind.

Some of these films make some semblance of sense. The Oath is a new Thanksgiving movie, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a classic, and Free Birds — which I assume centers on a bunch of Lynyrd Skynyrd-loving turkeys gamely trying to make their way back to their sweet home of Alabama — fits the bill. But Jack and Jill as the first result?

Are we talking about the Jack and Jill that has a 3% rating on Rotten Tomatoes? The same Jack and Jill that became the first movie in history to sweep the Razzie Awards? The Jack and Jill so critically reviled it prompted Tom Long of the Detroit News to say “the apocalypse starts here” in his review? I understand this film takes place over the holidays so it’s technically a Thanksgiving movie, but it’s also a film that made the active choice to cast living legend Al Pacino as a fictionalized version of himself… and then decided to have him fall in love with Adam Sandler in drag.

That’s it, Google. I’m taking all my future inquiries to Bing.

Dammit, Bing. This was your one chance to out-Google Google. And guess what, Buster? Ya blew it.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a terrific comedy, highly rewatchable, but it pales in popularity to a number of classic Christmas films. It’s bizarre to think that Christmas has an endless amount of popular movies, but Thanksgiving, one of our most celebrated holidays, has turkey, the NFL, and… Jack and Jill.
