‘Queer Eye’s Fab Five Sounds Off On Macy’s Parade Same-Sex Kiss: “Let’s Show More of It”

This Thanksgiving, the Macy’s Parade made history when it aired its first same-sex kiss. The moment caused something of a stir among conservative viewers, and by Monday, the controversy made its way to The View, where the co-hosts all agreed that watching the young women kiss was “important” for LGBT+ representation. On Wednesday morning, The View returned to the topic and gave their guests, Queer Eye‘s Fab Five, a chance to weigh in on the controversy. Avocado god Antoni Porowski had a particularly strong reaction to the same-sex kiss, saying that we should “show more of it,” while breakout star Jonathan Van Ness insisted that the world has “had to endure a lot of heterosexual kissing” and it’s time to see something different. Slay us with that truth, JVN!

When asked about the kiss, which was part of the float for Broadway musical “The Prom,” Porowski chimed in immediately, saying that the backlash is “a reminder that the rest of the country is not New York.” However, he still believes that the moment “normalizes” LGBT experiences. “I think it’s only a good thing. Let’s show more of it,” Porowski said to applause from the audience.

Tan France went on to say that America wouldn’t care “if this were a heterosexual couple kissing on national TV,” but Van Ness wasn’t satisfied with that response. “I’ve had to endure a lot of heterosexual kissing in my life,” quipped the groomer. “We all have!” added The View‘s Whoopi Goldberg. She continued, “If it had been an interracial kiss, we’d be having this conversation. Listen, the bottom line is, we have to be more patient than everybody else is with us. Because they don’t know what you know, or what I know, or what Joy knows, or what Abby knows.”

According to Porowski, this is why art  — and a show like Queer Eye — is so important. “We have to be willing to teach people through the arts. Something like Broadway, where families come from all over the country,” he said.
