Drummond Money Coutts: Everything You Need to Know About the Star of ‘Death By Magic’

True magic lovers know to never ask “How’d he do that?” but if you’ve been watching the incredible new Netflix series Death By Magic and find yourself wondering “Who’s that guy?” well that IS an appropriate question for magic lovers to ask about host Drummond Money-Coutts. And just like the illusions he pulls off, some of this information may astonish you.

Who is magician Drummond Money-Coutts, aka DMC?

As his official bio explains, DMC was “born into the financial dynasty of Coutts & Co., today the private bank to the British royal family,” and it was a visit to a magic store “beneath the vaults of Coutts & Co. headquarters in London” with his father, Lord Crispin Latymer, at just eight years old that began to pave his career path. Beginning in 1999, he attended the prestigious Eton College along with a couple of brothers you might know, Princes William and Harry, and while DMC took a crack at the family business by taking internships at Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch, that didn’t last too long. He soon ran away to study magic all over the world, including in India, Bangkok, and Africa before he returned to work in a London casino. The charismatic magician and host as studied the complicated history of the art form, as well as skills including mind-reading, spoon-bending, and card magic (he has a collection of more than 2,000 decks). While a mishap while performing a stunt in 2012 nearly found his body torn apart by two golf carts, DMC only worked harder and is now at the top of his game.

What does the tattoo on DMC’s head mean?

Ah, yes. The magician is unique in many ways, but sporting a tattoo on his bald head certainly differentiates him from others. According to these Quora entries, the three words in Hindi are: “Housla: meaning courage, Pyar: meaning love and Vishvas: meaning Belief.” So when you put the three together, it means “the courage to believe in love.”

Does DMC have other magic specials?

Perhaps you’ve seen him before on the National Geographic special Card Shark or the seven-part series for the network, Beyond Magic with DMC (you can find many of these clips on YouTube with a quick search) but now you have eight magic-packed episodes of Death by Magic available to stream on Netflix. The show takes the magician to four continents, meeting people from all over the world and performing some of the most dangerous stunts in the industry. His website also explains that due to his success, his audiences have included “royal families, sultans, sheikhs, presidents and prime ministers around the world,” with performances in over 170 and the likes of Hugh Grant and Emma Watson watching him work. Oh, and also you, at home in your sweatpants.

DMC, now 32-years-old, officially moved to Los Angeles in 2017 to begin working on Death by Magic, and if you’ve already breezed through the series, there’s plenty more where that came from. You can check out DMC’s official YouTube page for more magic, behind the scenes videos, and Q&As from the man himself, and you can follow him on Facebook, and Instagram to keep your feeds fresh. Perhaps if we all get our friends to watch Death by Magic, Netflix will even make a Season 2 appear in front of our very eyes!
