Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next” Boosted the Sales of All the Movies It Referenced

Video doesn’t always kill the radio star. Sometimes they can work together. According to Amazon, Ariana Grande‘s latest music video “thank u, next” boosted the streaming sales of all the iconic movies it referenced. Go Ariana, go!

The video for “thank u, next” was always going to be a big deal. A super catchy song bop all about Grande’s exes in the wake of her whirlwind romance with Pete Davidson? That’s almost an immediate must watch. But what transitioned the “thank u, next” video from a fun time to one of pop’s highlights of the year is how it incorporated classic 2000s girl-driven comedies. Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, 13 Going on 30, and Bring It On all got shoutouts in the video’s five minute runtime. Mean Girls‘ Aaron Samuels even made an appearance alongside the army pants and flip flops girl, and Legally Blonde star Jennifer Coolidge got a lengthy mid-video scene. It’s a nostalgic delight.

It’s also one that prompted a lot of people to revisit their cinematic pasts. According to Amazon, the average streams of Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, 13 Going on 30, and Bring It On increased 33 percent week over week on Prime Video. This data was taken from the Friday the video premiered on YouTube to Sunday. And since none of these four movies are currently available on Prime Video, that means several people were so desperate to relive rom-com Mark Ruffalo and the bend and snap they were willing to pay at least $3.99 for a rental.

If you’re looking for a guide to the many, many film references in this bop we already have you covered. But let’s take a moment to appreciate our queen. Not only is Ariana Grande living her best single girl life, she’s boosting the economy while she’s at it.
