This Week’s ‘Riverdale’ Had a Super ‘Smallville’ Easter Egg

Starting Sunday on The CW, the network’s superheroes will cross over in an epic three night event titled “Elseworlds,” mashing together their universes to face an unstoppable threat. But the crossover may have gotten kicked off early on a surprising source, as this week’s Riverdale featured a shocking Smallville Easter Egg!

Okay, no, of course SupergirlThe Flash, and Arrow aren’t crossing over with Riverdale (though Arrow star Stephen Amell has promised some Smallville surprises on their shows). But fans of the long running Superman origin show (which ran for five years on The WB before the network turned into The CW) may have recognized an iconic location that popped up during the Archie (KJ Apa) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) section of the episode.

In “Chapter Forty-Two: The Man in Black,” Archie and Jughead are on the run from Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) when they decide to hide out on a farm owned by Laurie Lake (guest star Riley Keough). But before Laurie Lake owned the farm, it was associated with another character with a predilection for women with “L.L.” as their initials. That would be Clark Kent (Tom Welling), who grew up on the same farm back in Smallville. And it certainly seems the non-Archie Comics canonical Lake is a sneaky reference to Clark paramour Lana Lang, or perhaps Lois Lane — even if she turns out to be more of a Lex Luthor.

Yep, the Lake house was — years earlier — the Kent farm, on an entirely different TV show.

Don’t believe me? Here’s the tweet which first noticed the connection:

Specifically, it’s a farm at 846 248 Street in Langley, British Columbia — we confirmed with Warner Bros. this was the same farm and not a remarkable facsimile. And it’s not that surprising the set was reused. Many of Warner Bros. productions film in the Vancouver area, including Riverdale and previously Smallville. So if you’re looking for an idyllic looking farm set that might lure in Archie Andrews, why not use the same one where another wholesome, American comic book character grew up?

And as a nice bonus, Archie already has an “S” symbol handy, courtesy his Southside Serpents tattoo. Can calling him “The Blur” be far behind?

Riverdale airs on Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
