James Corden, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Emily Blunt Perform 22 Musicals in One Take on ‘The Late Late Show’

It’s no secret that James Corden likes to push his Late Late Show guests to the limit, but Tuesday night’s show got even more extreme when he recruited Lin-Manuel Miranda and Emily Blunt to perform 22 (!) musicals in just 12 minutes. The single-take “Role Call” featured highlights from some of the most iconic movie musicals of the past 50 years, including ChicagoGuys and Dolls, and, of course, Blunt and Miranda’s new film Mary Poppins Returns. The stars expertly nail the many costume, song, and set changes required of a trip through musical history, resulting in a 12-minute video that’s just downright extraordinary.

“Anyone who watches this show knows how much I love musicals,” Corden began at the top of the segment. “So tonight, we’ll be doing a Role Call celebrating some of the greatest movie musicals of all time, as fast as we can, in one take.” Obviously, Corden can’t handle that challenge on his own, so he recruited the movie musical stars of this holiday season: Blunt and Miranda. They both looked visibly nervous, as one would if you were trying to perform 22 musicals in 12 minutes without messing up once.

The trio kicked things off with Cabaret, keeping things relatively calm with a basic song and dance number. Then came Chicago, with Blunt taking on Liza Minnelli’s “All That Jazz” (feather boa and all). After a Ryan Gosling-less La La Land, they transitioned to Beauty and the Beast, followed by Guys and Dolls and Evita. And who could deny Miranda his Singin’ In The Rain moment? The Hamilton creator rivaled Gene Kelly with that umbrella, but he only had a few seconds before plugging Mary Poppins Returns (in theaters today, December 19!).

Corden then took on a banjo-ed Kermit in The Muppet Movie before Blunt nailed The Wizard of Oz‘s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Then came HairsprayDreamgirls, my personal favorite, AnnieFiddler on the RoofInto the Woods, and Little Shop of Horrors. Blunt plugged Under Armour during a piece from Les Mis and donned a different wig for Moulin Rouge. An understated Once immediately transitioned into a green screen-inspired Fame, followed by Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. And of course, the winded trio wrapped things up with Mamma Mia!. All is right in the world.
