Michelle Obama Reveals Her Final Thoughts About Leaving the White House: “Bye, Felicia!”

On Tuesday night, former First Lady Michelle Obama visited The Tonight Show to promote her new memoir, “Becoming.” Obama and host Jimmy Fallon discussed everything under the sun, from marriage counseling (“Marriage is hard, even for us”) to her time in the White House to The Rock. But the undoubted highlight of the interview came when Obama revealed what went through her mind as she left the White House in 2017: “Bye, Felicia!” Obama’s answer practically made Fallon fall out of his chair laughing, and he never quite recovered, even as the interview turned to the importance of having “hope” and “optimism” moving forward.

After discussing her marriage with Barack, Fallon showed a photo of the couple as they were boarding a plane to leave the White House in 2017. Fallon began to ask what was going through her mind in that moment, just hours after President Trump’s inauguration, but before he could finish the question, she interrupted him. “Bye, Felicia!” said Obama. Fallon rolled around in his chair as he tried to collect himself, and after about 30 seconds, he finally got off another question. “Is that what was going through your mind?” he asked. “A lot was going on that day. That was a day,” replied Obama.

Obama went on to say that Sasha and Malia’s friends slept over in the White House the night before, so she spent the morning trying to get everyone out. “My daughters’ friends decided that they needed a sleepover for the last day,” she recalled. “‘I was like, ‘Are you guys kidding me? We’re leaving. You’ve got to take all your stuff, pick it up. The blankets, the bears.’ They’re all crying. And it was like, ‘Get out. We’ve got to go.'” Between the sleepover mayhem and “the Tiffany’s box” that Melania Trump gave her, “it was just all a lot,” said Obama.
