The Gist: If you’ve seen the trailer for Overthinking with Kat & June you’re already aware of the show’s hook: Many of Kat and June’s inner thoughts are heard out loud (think Scrubs). This type of narrative device is often tricky to organically implement, but series creator Mackenzie Yeager does a wonderful job of not only using Kat and June’s inner musings as a fun new mechanism for humor but to also show the complexities and insecurities of adult friendship.

One of the benefits of internal narration is that it helps with exposition. Episode 1 of the series is fully formed. Devoid of any early episode growing pains, the pilot centers on new roommates Kat and June throwing a house party in an effort to get to know one another. From minute one you know these characters. Kat is assertive and June is anxious. Conflict breeds both story and comedy, and Kat and June are about as different as can be.

The duo’s odd couple dynamic and instant comedic chemistry are evident from the start.

Our Take: Two things immediately stand out while watching Overthinking with Kat and June: The writing and the performances from Intriago and Dox. The sitcom exudes an offbeat sensibility while remaining painstakingly relatable. That’s not an easy balance to strike.

Kat and June’s opposites attract dynamic is at its best when you add a third person into the mix. Watching how differently they react to their attractive landlord Dave (Justin Kirk) highlights the dissimilarities between the pair. In any other scenario, these two would not be friends. You can ignore a lot of unpleasantness, but there’s no escaping your roommate.

It’s awkward as hell in real life, but reluctant friendship is a ton of fun to watch.

Sleeper Star: Scene-stealer extraordinaire Sasheer Zamata makes a brief cameo in the pilot and every single weird word from “the night court twins” (Elizabeth and Emily Hinkler) is A++, but wow, Alexia Dox is a comedic force to be reckoned with. June could be irritating in the hands of a lesser actress, but Dox portrays the overly-anxious character with a subtle confidence. She makes an unequivocal choice with June and it absolutely works. The character’s perpetual apprehension comes off as relatable, not weird. Endearing, not annoying. Dox’s line reads and comedic instincts are truly next level.

The whole show is extremely well cast, but Dox is a future superstar.

Funniest Moments: There are three moments from the pilot that floored me. The first one’s a visual bit. During June and Kat’s party, there’s a sign that simply reads “You are having fun,” which is both random and brilliant. I’m also extremely jealous of these two lines:

“David would never ‘aoooga.’ He’s a dad, not a horny cartoon.” (June)

“June, is your one idea of a sophisticated lady the one pretty girl from Guess Who?” (Kat)

Our Call: Stream it. Absolutely stream it. Overthinking with Kat & June is not only a fresh take on the awkwardness of adult friendship but it’s also a ton of fun. I understand there’s no shortage of new content out there, but Overthinking with Kat & June is an absurdly funny comedy not to be missed.
