In many ways, 2018 was a butt of a year. There’s no denying that. A big ol’ stinky butt that was pale and unappealing very un-cinematic. Which is why in the very butty year of 2018, it was all the more important that we had great butts to fall back on. (Not literally, but just imagine that particular Tina Belcher fantasy for a while.)
The great butts of 2018 were sometimes unexpected. They were sometimes sensual. They were sometimes educational. But they were always there for us in times of need. This time of year, as we pay tribute to the films, TV shows, performances, and other ephemera that helped us weather 2018, we are very much here to honor the year’s best butts.

Darren Criss’s performance as Andrew Cunanan was a terrifying marvel. He brought so much intensity and sociopathic verve to the performance. He’s also Darren Criss, though, which was crucial to showing how this ultimate monster was able to seem momentarily alluring. And by “alluring” we mean “that butt shot.”
Richard Madden in 'Bodyguard'
Richard Madden’s bounce-back from the Red Wedding on Game of Thrones really hit its stride in 2018. From showing up in Ibiza as a hot-as-hell DJ to his hugely popular British/Netflix hit Bodyguard. The latter, in addition to being a Golden Globes fave also let Madden show off his bum for an international audience.
Chris Pine in 'Outlaw King'
Chris Pine’s full-frontal penis flash in Outlaw King got all the attention — like, a LOT of attention — but for our money, easily the best use of Chris Pine’s body in that movie was getting to see his butt in his big sex scene with Florence Pugh.
Betty Gilpin on 'GLOW'
GLOW, in addition to being the best show on television, also features a cast playing professional wrestlers, traditionally one of the most butt-friendly professions in America. The excellent Betty Gilpin, as Debbie a.k.a. Liberty Belle, delivers a strong, shattering performance all season, and this moment alone in the locker room shows some powerful vulnerability.
Adam Rippon at the 2018 Winter Olympics
Adam Rippon was easily the breakout American star of the Winter Olympics this year, becoming a gay icon and showing off his incredible athletic prowess at the same time. But before it was time for Dancing with the Stars or Will & Grace appearances, Rippon’s skating did the talking, and everybody got a chance to see his headline-making butt (there had been controversy that he was wearing butt pads, but Adam shot down those rumors quickly — it’s just that good of a butt!).

Big Mouth‘s “We Love Our Bodies” was one of the best, most creative, and most progressive musical moments of 2018. It was also a great reminder that the best butts of 2018 came in all shapes and sizes.
The 'Sense8' Finale Orgy
The series finale movie of Sense8 delivered in every way, wrapping up the two-season plot, bringing the right characters together, and ending on a genuinely moving, yet simultaneously very sexy series-ending orgy that was as queer and sex-positive as anything that’s ever been on TV.
Evan Peters in 'American Horror Story: Apocalypse'
American Horror Story: Apocalypse was the ultimate AHS season for many reasons, but a big one was that it fully stopped caring about trying to explain its casting redundancies. Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters just play multiple characters in this universe, and nobody needs to bother explaining it. What really freaked people out, though, was when his initial character, hairdresser Mr. Gallant, ended up in a hardcore S&M scene with the man in the rubber suit … which last time we saw was Evan Peters as Tate Langdon on AHS: Murder House. Only American Horror Story would feature a sex scene between Evan Peters and himself.
Lisa Vanderpump (Apparently)
This one is totally theoretical, but when Stassi took her boyfriend Patrick to meet Lisa Vanderpump for the first time on Vanderpump Rules, Patrick made an ass of himself by obsessively referencing Lisa’s. As he grossly kept talking about liking to watch Lisa walk away, we like to think that something inside of Stassi made the decision to break up with him right then and there.
