2018 In Review: The Biggest Dick Energy of the Year

These first two ladies are a total BDE power duo. Debbie and Lou are the women we all wish we could be. Total badasses and criminal masterminds are just the beginning. I mean, who better could pull off the biggest jewel heist of the decade? No one. In the movie, Lou asks Debbie why she wants to rob the Met, and Debbie’s response is “Because I’m good at it.” If that’s not BDE than I don’t know what is.

Cordelia Foxx is certainly no stranger to big dick energy. She’s the Supreme. No doubt she was awesome in American Horror Story: Coven, but she stepped up her game big time in AHS: Apocalypse. Her most iconic moment of Apocalypse occurs during the season finale, when we watch as she finally shows Langdon who’s boss. To the audience’s (and Langdon’s) surprise, Cordelia sacrifices herself in order to save her successor Mallory and all of humanity. Nothing less of badassery here.

It seems impossible that the ubiquitous phrase Big Dick Energy was created before audiences laid their eyes on Blake Lively as Emily Nelson in A Simple Favor, because she is the ultimate definition of that confidence. For real, if someone is somehow unfamiliar with that phrase, please point to this character as the explanation. From those decadent suits, those quippy comebacks, her give no fucks attitude, and her general power vibe as a whole, it was impossible to take your eyes off Lively (and now that the movie is available on demand, you don’t have to!). It was some of the best work we’ve ever seen from Lively as the mysterious Emily, and a true sign that she is the BDE Queen. – Lea Palmieri

Every teen drama has a fierce HBIC but Prudence Night is a witch and therefore, trumps any mortal. Prudence’s bad side is not one you’d want to be on. She shows no mercy, even for the people she loves. Need I remind you that she buried her fellow Weird Sister alive after killing a mortal without permission?! You just know that Prudence is the most confident person in any room.

Another badass character played by an even more badass actress. Okoye is the head of Wakanda’s armed forces and intel. When she appears in both Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, we never see a moment of vulnerability. Just look at that gif. Would someone without big dick energy be able to accomplish that? I think not. If you need even more convincing, she survived Thanos.

One of the highlights from Season 2 of Claws was Franka Potente’s fearless performance as Zlata, the Russian gangster who kills her sister (!) to take control of the family business in Florida. From her opulent outfits to her flawless manicures, Zlata wields stacks of cash and gold plated guns with equal ease.  Determined to make any men in her way pay for their trespasses, Zlata controls every situation and demands respect,  If she needs to show who’s boss by making a rival  lick her boot, so be it.  One of her greatest triumphs? Turning the local strip club into the Hammer n’ Pickle, an all-male revue.  Now if that isn’t Big Dick Energy, what is? – Karen Kemmerle

Whereas most of the opulently rich women we meet in the film aim to be the perfect arm candy, Peik Lin only lives for herself. She’s loud, rambunctious, and has a “Walk of Shame” dress packed into the trunk of her luxe sportscar. Crazy Rich Asians might be full of hot studs, but Peik Lin is the only one with BDE. – Meghan O’Keefe

Theo Crain is the kind of person who walks into a room and the world stops. She has the ultimate amount of confidence and never fails to use it to her advantage. She’s never cocky, though. While sometimes she does seem a little closed off, her ability to feel other people’s pain has humbled her immensely. She’s got BDE flowing from her fingertips.

Ms. Viola Davis is already a queen in real life, but her role as Veronica in Widows is the actual definition of big dick energy. Her give no fucks attitude and undeniable fearlessness may intimidate you, but at the same time you’d do literally anything to impress her. Any woman who finishes her late-husband’s heist already has BDE in my book, but Veronica Rawlins takes it 100 steps further by doing it with style, poise, and a fluffy white dog by her side.

When Phoebe Waller-Bridge first wrote the character description for Killing Eve’s Villanelle, I have to imagine that it only said one thing: “Exudes BDE.” Jodie Comer’s villain is both sexy and absolutely terrifying, and she has a confidence that Pete Davidson could only dream of. Villanelle does so much more than just confront Eve, a British intelligence officer; the assassin also toys with Eve’s emotions by sending her clothes, forcing her into awkward dinner conversation, and killing her friend right in the middle of a club. Plus, Villanelle makes time to stop by a supermarket for some focaccia and cheese (is there some arugula on that flatbread, too?) before killing someone in a Tuscan villa. Huge flex. – Claire Spellberg
