Lemony Snicket’s often thrilling, ever informative, and always unfortunate series has finally come to an end. With the premiere of its third season, A Series of Unfortunate Events has told its story and the Baudelaire orphans are off to pursue new adventures, this time on their own terms. But if you spent the New Year binge-watching the trials of this sad family you may be curious about the revolving door of familiar yet disguised faces in Season 3.

Netflix’s adaptation of Snicket’s (the pen name of author Daniel Handler) iconic series has always been a casting delight. Horrible, greedy villains and brave heroes alike have been portrayed by big stars, all of which have been hidden under this universe’s signature combination of polished clothes and elaborate wigs. But there are a handful of new characters who probably left you reaching for the IMDB app on your phone. Who played Frank, Ernest, and Dewey Denouement in “The Penultimate Peril” saga? And who exactly was the Baudelaires’ forever mentioned and never seen mother, Beatrice? Season 3 spoilers ahead.

Who plays Frank, Ernest, and Dewey Denouement in A Series of Unfortunate Events?

Remember the Hotel Denouement’s confusing management system composed of one twin who is trustworthy, one who is evil, and a secret sub-sub librarian triplet? These three confusing characters and their magnificent mustaches are all played by the same actor — Max Greenfield.

Greenfield is best known for starring as Schmidt on the beloved sitcom New Girl. He’s also starred in Veronica Mars, The Big Short, and the currently running sitcom The Neighborhood.

Halfway through “The Penultimate Peril,” Dewey Denouement is confronted by Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris). Held at harpoon point, Dewey doesn’t give up the location of the sugar bowl but gives Olaf three clues about its whereabouts. Olaf then thrusts the harpoon gun into the Baudelaires’ hands, causing it to go off and shoot him. With his final breath, Dewey reassures the children they aren’t to blame for his death before saying the name of his love, “Kit.”

Who plays Beatrice Baudelaire in A Series of Unfortunate Events?

At long last we finally got to see the mysterious and possibly departed mother of the Baudelaire orphans, and she did not disappoint. Beatrice Baudelaire is played by Morena Baccarin. The actress is best known for playing Ryan Reynolds’ love interest Vanessa in the Deadpool movies, starring as Leslie Thompson in Fox’s Batman drama Gotham, and for being the face of the cult one-season wonder Firefly. Considering that Nathan Fillion also starred in Season 2 as Jacques Snicket, this Netflix original has become a bit of a mini-Firefly reunion. But there’s more to Beatrice Baudelaire than her actress’ impressive filmography.

In the final episode of A Series of Unfortunate Events we learn that the Beatrice that Lemony Snicket (Patrick Warburton) has been sadly writing to, and the Baudelaires’ mother, are one in the same. It turns out Lemony and Beatrice were in a serious relationship for some time, but a horrible accident that resulted in the death of Count Olaf’s father forced them apart. Beatrice went on to marry the Baudelaires’ father and invent, write, and cook incredible things all while helping humanity. After her death, Lemony devoted his life to finding and helping her children.

Right at the end of their long and perilous story, the Baudelaires find themselves stranded on an island and living among a perpetually happy and possibly brainwashed group of people. The leader of this cult is none other than one of Olaf’s greatest enemies and the Baudelaires’ friend, Ishmael the Volunteer.

But who exactly is the man under all of that wild white facial hair? That would be Peter MacNicol, best known for his work as John Cage on Ally McBeal and Stingo in Sophie’s Choice.

Who plays Kit Snicket in A Series of Unfortunate Events?

We’ve met Lemony and the departed Jaques Snicket’s (Nathan Fillion) headstrong sister before. The noble volunteer is played by Allison Williams, who is best known for two very adult roles. Williams starred in Girls as the often insufferable Marnie, and she also starred in Jordan Peele’s Get Out as Rose, the girlfriend that leads Daniel Kaluuya’s character into that movie’s nightmare.

Out of all the characters in this series, Kit’s fate may be the most unfortunate. After devoting her life to putting out fires and helping people, the pregnant Snicket sister washes up on the same island as the Baudelaires. She’s poisoned along with everyone else when Olaf releases the deadly Medusoid Mycelium, but it’s Olaf who ultimately saves her. His last act in the series is to carry the woman he once loved to safety before dying. Kit eventually succumbs to the poison, afraid that taking the antidote will harm her baby. The series ends with the Baudelaire orphans now responsible for an orphan of their own — Beatrice Baudelaire.
