Hulu 2019 Preview: 11 Must-See Titles Coming This Year

Hulu is roaring into 2019 with what might be its most ambitious slate of originals yet. Not only are critical hits like The Handmaid’s Tale and goofy binge-fests like Future Man returning for new seasons, but the streaming service has plans to bring some truly major TV events to you later this year.

Superstar George Clooney’s highly anticipated adaptation of Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 is due to hit Hulu later this year. The World War II drama stars Girls actor Christopher Abbott as an Air Force pilot grappling with a mind-bending question of survival versus sanity. Mindy Kaling is continuing her tight relationship with the service, but it’s not with more episodes of The Mindy Project. Instead, Kaling is updating the classic British rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral into a sexy, dreamy, modern, diverse new limited series starring a beguiling Game of Thrones alum. And cult favorite Veronica Mars is coming back for a fourth season this summer!

But before those big, splashy series hit Hulu, we’ve got a Winter slate full of more Into the Dark, brand new comedies from The Lonely Island and SNL‘s Aidy Bryant, and a harrowing true crime mini-series starring The Kissing Booth‘s Joey King. Here’s a look at the big shows and films hitting Hulu in 2019…

Release Date: TBA
Who’s Involved: Superstar George Clooney and his producing partner Grant Heslov are co-directing this lavish adaptation of Joseph Heller’s landmark war novel. Christopher Abbot stars as Yossarian, and Kyle Chander and Clooney co-star.
What We Know: We don’t know much yet beyond the fact that Clooney and company filmed this limited series on location in Europe last year. Besides that, we have to go to the book, which is about Yossarian’s maddening dilemma: if he tries to run away from the fight, it’s proof of his sanity, which by military law means he’s ready for combat. (Hence “Catch-22.”)

‘RAMY’

Release Date: TBA
Who’s Involved: Comedian Ramy Youssef stars in this show he created based on his own life, and Jerrod Carmichael executive produces.
What We Know: We don’t know much about the show except its about Youssef’s own reflections upon being a young first-generation American Muslim trying to figure out his place in the modern world.

Release Date: TBA (Though Kristen Bell’s Instagram says Summer 2019)
Who’s Involved: Original series stars Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, and Max Greenfield are all coming back, and series creator Rob Thomas is writing.
What We Know: We’ll let Hulu’s uber-detailed press release speak for itself: “Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.” Sounds like a true mystery for today’s time.

‘FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL’

Release Date: TBA
Who’s Involved: Last spring Mindy Kaling surprised the folks at Hulu’s Upfronts to announce that she was working on a modern and diverse update of Richard Curtis’s ‘90s hit. Jessica Williams was supposed to star, but has been replaced by Game of Thrones Nathalie Emmanuel. Nikesh Patel and Rebecca Rittenhouse also co-star.
What We Know: Well…that’s about it. We know that it’s going to be a limited series and that Andie Macdowell will have a cameo, though not as her original film character.

‘THE HANDMAIDS TALE’ SEASON 3

Handmaids Family Separation

Release Date: TBA
Who’s Involved: As far as we know, the main gang’s all back. Showrunner Bruce Miller, leading lady Elisabeth Moss, and the rest of the despairing souls of Gilead. What we don’t know is when it will hit Hulu.
What We Know: In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Bruce Miller summed up the vibe for Season 3 as “Blessed Be The Fight.” So if Season 2 was way too much of a downer for you, prepare for Season 3 to focus less on the trials and tribulations of Gilead and more on the insurgency brewing outside and from within.
