Netflix 2019 TV Preview: Your Guide to New and Returning Shows

Thought 2018 was a big year for Netflix Original TV shows? Wait until you see what’s in store for 2019.

We’ve already brought you Decider’s guide to Netflix’s biggest movie premieres, but there’s even more in store when it comes to returning and entirely new series. Huge stars, huge behind the scenes talent, and some of the biggest shows on TV (Stranger Things is finally back!) means you’ll probably be hearing that Netflix “ba-doom” sound reverberate throughout your house nearly every weekend (and day) this year.

Below is your cheat sheet to 46 Netflix originals that will definitely premiere in 2019, as well as a few guesses. Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for plenty of surprise TV shows we don’t even know about yet, because Netflix is the Beyoncé of streaming services.

From brooding dramatic miniseries and revivals of classic kid’s shows, to important docuseries and new anime adaptations, you’re going to need two Netflix accounts just to watch it all. 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' Season 3

Who’s Involved?: So many big names. Louis Hynes, Malina Weissman, and Presely Smith round out the three leading orphans. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) is our Count Olaf, and the rest of this series is filled with all-star TV actors including Tony Hale, Nathan Fillion, Allison Williams, and more.

What We Know: The final installment of this Netflix original, Season 3 covers the last chapter in the sad saga of the Baudelaire orphans . Get ready to gasp at some familiar faces and to tear up at this heart-breaking conclusion.

'Comedians of the World'

Release Date: January 1

Who’s Involved?: There are lots of funny people headlining this international comedy special. Neal Brennan, Nicole Byer, Chris D’Elia, and Nick Swardson represent the U.S. in this series.

What We Know: This global stand-up series features sets from 13 different regions of the world as they explore what’s funny.

'Tidying Up with Marie Kondo' Season 1

Release Date: January 1

Who’s Involved?: The queen of minimizing your life, Marie Kondo.

What We Know: Through a series of amazing makeovers, world-renowned tidying and organization expert Marie Kondo teaches viewers how to de-clutter their own lives.

'Friends from College' Season 2

Release Date: January 11

Who’s Involved?: Cobie Smulders, Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Savage, Jae W. Suh, and Anna Parisse (Law & Order, The Following) lead this Netflix comedy.

What We Know: Two decades after graduation a tight-knit group of friends from college reconnect. They soon discover that love is still just as difficult as it was when they were chugging beers.

'Sex Education' Season 1

Who’s Involved?: Asa Butterfield and Gillian Anderson star in this British comedy

What We Know: Sex is confusing and difficult for all teenagers, but it’s a million times worse for this teen and his sex therapist mom. This frank comedy confronts the awkwardness of intimacy head on.

'Carmen Sandiego' Season 1

Release Date: January 18

Who’s Involved?: Get ready for another well-cast Netflix animated original. Gina Rodriguez stars as Carmen Sandiego, and Finn Wolfhard stars as Player.

What We Know: The savvy, globe-trotting spy is returning for a new generation. If the super thief isn’t in hiding, she’s kicking the evil organization V.I.L.E.’s butt. Get ready this one is going to be fun.

'Grace and Frankie' Season 5

Release Date: January 18

Who’s Involved?: The crew is back. You can expect Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sam Waterston, Martin Sheen, and June Diane Raphael to return for Season 5.

What We Know: Expect more antics as these former rivals turned best friends continue to navigate the worlds of romance and old age.

'The Punisher' Season 2

Release Date: January 18

Who’s Involved?: You can expect Jon Bernthal to return as the Punisher. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ben Barnes, and Amber Rose Revah will likely also be making appearances.

What We Know: Marvel and Netflix’s most violent collaboration follows a former Marine whose attempts to avenge his family’s death places him in the middle of a government conspiracy.

'Conversation with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes'

Release Date: January 24

Who’s Involved?: This docu-series released 30 years after Bundy’s execution is directed by Joe Berlinger (The Paradise Lost trilogy).

What We Know: This never-before-seen docu-series will unveil exclusive footage and phone calls as it takes a deeper look into the mind of one of Florida’s most notorious killers. The Ted Bundy Tapes will be a four episode series.

'Black Earth Rising'

Release Date: January 25

Who’s Involved?: This UK series is already set to be your new drama obsession. It stars John Goodman, Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum), and Tamara Tunie (As the World Turns).

What We Know: This international series follows the story of Kate Ashby, a legal investigator in the London law chambers of barrister Michael Ennis. After Katie’s mom Eve takes on a case against an African militia leader, their lives are changed forever.

'Kingdom' Season 1

Release Date: January 25

Who’s Involved?: This period drama is Netflix’s second original from South Korea. It was created by Kim Eun-hee and directed by Kim Seong-hun.

What We Know: A prince becomes his kingdom’s only hope against a mysterious plague.

'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmit' Season 4

Release Date: January 25

Who’s Involved?: Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski, and Carol Kane are coming back.

What We Know: In the last installment of its final season, Kimmy, Titus, Jacqueline, and Lilian are still stumbling through their brightly colored version of New York. Prepare for a lot of antics, and even more empowering and weird speeches about friendship.

'Russian Doll'

Release Date: February 1

Who’s Involved?: From creators Amy Poehler, Leslye Headland, and Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is the New Black) comes this new dark drama.

What We Know: It’s Groundhog Day but for parties. One young woman keeps dying, then waking up back at her birthday party. Can she get out of the loop alive?

'The Umbrella Academy' Season 1

Who’s Involved?: Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comic is being adapted for Netflix by Steve Blackman. The superhero series will star Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Mary J. Blige, and Cameron Britton.

What We Know: A dysfunctional family of superheroes are forced to come together to solve the mystery of their father’s death.

'Cannon Busters'

Release Date: March 1

Who’s Involved?: The 12-episode anime series is based on the comic by LeSean Thomas.

What We Know: Friendship droid S.A.M. searches for its best friend, the head of a kingdom under siege. Along the way it will team up with a fugitive and a maintenance robot.

'Turn Up Charlie'

Release Date: March 15

Who’s Involved?: Idris Elba. If that’s not enough of a draw, we don’t know what to tell you.

What We Know: Elba will star as a struggling DJ who becomes a nanny for a famous friend’s daughter. That’s right, the Pacific Rim star is going full The Rock in Tooth Fairy.

'Ultraman'

Release Date: April 1

Who’s Involved?: The series is an adaptation of Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi’s recent Ultraman comic. Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) will star in the series.

What We Know: A reboot of the 1960s series of the same name, Ultraman picks up years after the titular hero disappears. As Shinjiro learns of his connection to Ultraman, he dons the metal suit to fight new aliens.

'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Season 1, Part 2

Release Date: April 5

Who’s Involved?: You can bet that Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, and Chance Perdomo will be back for more dark magic.

What We Know: The second half of the first season of this Netflix original will follow Sabrina after she’s accepted Satan as her lord and master, and become a full-time witch. You know, normal high school stuff.

'Our Planet'

Release Date: April 5

Who’s Involved?: From the creators of Planet Earth, this nature docu-series will be narrated by none other than Sir David Attenborough.

What We Know: We live on a truly spectacular planet, and once again David Attenborough will take us through some of the world’s most precious environments.

'Rilakkuma and Kaoru'

Release Date: April 19

Who’s Involved?: The first stop motion adaptation of this beloved character was written by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Naoko Ogigami. Creator Aki Kondo is also involved.

What We Know: The 13-episode series follows Rilakkuma, a soft toy bear who shows up one day to live with a young woman named Kaoru.

'Stranger Things 3'

Release Date: July 4

Who’s Involved?: All your faves are coming back. Expect appearances from Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, and Charlie Heaton.

What We Know: The third season of the Duffer brothers’ series is going to be set in mid-1985 during — get this — the summer. Get ready for more sci-fi insanity as the Upside Down continues to bleed into the town of Hawkins.

'Bard of Blood' (Working Title)

Release Date: TBA

Who’s Involved?: Emraan Hashmi is set to star as Kabir Anand in this Indian original series.

What We Know: While Kabir Anand settles into his new life as a Shakespeare professor in the remote mountains of Panchgani, a mysterious phone call brings him back to the life he’s trying to leave. We don’t have a date announcement for this particular series. However, Bard of Blood did get a teaser trailer in late July of 2018.

'Dolly Parton's Heartstrings'

Release Date: TBA

Who’s Involved?: Julianne Hough is set to play a main character in this anthology series.

What We Know: Each episode of this eight-episode anthology series will be based on a different Dolly Parton song. Heartstrings will tell stories about love, inspirational people, Westerns, and revenge comedies, all of which will be introduced by Parton herself.

'Hache' Season 1

Release Date: TBA

Who’s Involved?: Hache is created by Verónica Fernández, best known for her Velvet Collection and for writing the award-winning film El Bola. Adriana Ugarte (The Time Between, Julieta) and Javier Rey (Sin Fin) will star.

What We Know: Netflix’s fifth Spanish series is a thriller. The eight-episode miniseries is based on real events, and focuses on a woman stuck in the middle of a heroin trafficking operation in Barcelona in the 1960s. The series is scheduled to be released sometime in 2019.

'Black Mirror' Season 5

Who’s Involved?: Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones will surely be involved in creating our latest batch of tech nightmares. We also know that Miley Cyrus will be starring in one episode.

What We Know: Very, very little. After the premiere of Bandersnatch we basically just know that there will be more episodes happening, and they’re set to premiere in 2019.

'Historia de un Crimen'

Release Date: TBA

Who’s Involved?: Julián Román and Enrique Carriazo have been cast in this anthology crime drama. Jorge A. Jiménez (Narcos) and Alberto Guerra (Ingobernable) are also set to star.

What We Know: The first installment of the eight-episode series will focus on the murder of politician Luis Donaldo Colosio. He was killed during a campaign rally in 1994. The second installment will jump ahead to 2010 to tell the story of Luis Andrés Colmenares. It was originally believed that the Los Andes University student died by suicide, but a year later his death was ruled as a murder.

'Messiah' Season 1

Release Date: TBA

Who’s Involved?: Created by Michael Petroni, this series will star Tomer Sisley, Michelle Monaghan, Mehdi Dehbi, and John Ortiz.

What We Know: The drama chronicles the world’s reaction after a man appears in the Middle East claiming to be the Messiah. We don’t know much about Messiah‘s premiere date besides the fact it’s supposed to come out in 2019.

'Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City'

Release Date: TBA

Who’s Involved?: Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, and Paul Gross have already agreed to be part of the revival.

What We Know: Based on the original PBS and Showtime collaboration Tales of the City, the continuation picks up where the first series left off. When a now middle-aged Mary Ann returns to 28 Barbary Lane, her life is turned upside down.

'Jessica Jones' Season 3

Who’s Involved?: Krysten Ritter, Mike Coulter, and Rachel Taylor will likely all return for this superhero show’s latest season.

What We Know: We know that our favorite superpowered PI will be returning sometime this year. It’s just a matter of when in 2019 it’s premiering. But there’s another, sadder question looming over this upcoming release… Can Jessica Jones escape the axe of Netflix and Marvel’s many cancellations, or is Season 4 a lost cause?

'Raising Dion'

Who’s Involved?: Michael B. Jordan stars in this sci-fi family drama.

What We Know: Based on Dennis Liu’s short film and comic book of the same name, single mother Nicole (Alisha Wainwright) has to take care of their son Dion (Ja’Siah Young) on her own after her husband Mark (Jordan) dies, all while navigating Dion’s ever-evolving collection of superhero powers.

Who’s Involved?: The anime is being co-created by Powerhouse CEO Brad Graeber and writer Alvaro Rodriguez (Machete, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series).

What We Know: Netflix’s first anime series set in Mexico follows three orphaned martial arts warriors who join forces with a DEA agent to avenge the death of their teacher.

'Quicksand'

Who’s Involved?: Based on the best-selling novel by Malin Persson Giolito, the hourlong series is being written by Camilla Ahlgren (The Bridge).

What We Know: Netflix’s first Swedish series revolves around how a mass shooting at a prep school in Stockholm’s wealthiest suburb changes the community.

'Tuca and Bertie'

Who’s Involved?: This animated series comes from Lisa Hanawalt, the artist behind BoJack Horseman. Tiffany Haddish plays the voice of Tuca, Ali Wong is Bertie.

What We Know: Basically The Odd Couple with animated birds, so sign us up.

'13 Reasons Why' Season 3

Who’s Involved?: Katherine Langford is seemingly out, but you can bet Dylan Minnette, Christian Navarro, and likely Alisha Boe will be making appearances again.

What We Know: Season 2 of the series ended with Clay (Minnette) holding a gun after disrupting a school shooting attempt. Presumably, we’ll pick up after that.

Who’s Involved?: The anime adaptation of the manga of the same name will be animated by Gonzo and directed by Yukio Takahashi.

'The Green Beret's Guide to Surviving the Apocalypse'

Who’s Involved?: The comedy anthology series is created by and stars Shawn Vance and Daril Fannin.

What We Know: The six-episode series will explore several insane world-ending scenarios like a nuclear war, a pandemic, and a supervolcano.

'Green Eggs and Ham'

Who’s Involved?: Jared Stern, Ellen DeGeneres, Jeff Kleeman, Mike Karz, and David Dobkin serve as the executive producers of this Dr. Seuss adaptation.

What We Know: Sam-I-Am and his friend go on a cross country trip that tests their patience. The animated series was first announced in 2015, but based on the show page it seems like this may be the year for odd-colored breakfast items.

'AJ and the Queen'

Who’s Involved?: RuPaul and Michael Patrick King are involved in this comedy series.

What We Know: RuPaul’s scripted Netflix series follows the unlikely friendship between “Ruby Red,” a glamorous but down-on-her-luck drag queen, and a scrappy 11-year-old stowaway named AJ.

'Insatiable' Season 2

Who’s Involved?: It seems likely that Debby Ryan and Dallas Roberts will be back for this Netflix comedy.

What We Know: After receiving scathing reviews, Netflix’s controversial show about an overweight girl seeking revenge will be coming back. Season 2 should premiere sometime in 2019.

'The Politician'

Who’s Involved?: Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, this upcoming comedy will star Jessica Lange, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ben Platt as well as other Murphy favorites.

What We Know: Every season of the show will follow Platt as the titular politician, as he competes in a different political race. This isn’t scheduled as of yet, but seems likely to drop later this year.

'Ratched'

Release Date: TBA

Who’s Involved?: This drama about the titular One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest character was created by Evan Romansky and is executive produced by Ryan Murphy. Sarah Paulson is set to play Nurse Ratched, and Finn Wittrock and Jon Jon Briones are also in the cast.

What We Know: An origin story for one of fiction’s most horrific characters, the series starts in 1947 and will show how she became a “full-fledged monster.”

'Chambers'

Release Date: TBA

Who’s Involved?: This upcoming supernatural series is created by Leah Rachel. Akela Cooper serves as the showrunner, and Sivan Alyra Rose, Griffin Powell-Arcand, Uma Thurman, and Tony Goldwyn are set to star.

What We Know: The drama follows a young heart attack survivor who becomes obsessed with a mystery surrounding the donated heart that saved her life.

Who’s Involved?: Created by Timothy Greenberg, Paul Rudd stars in this upcoming comedy.

What We Know: After a burnt-out man undergoes a strange treatment, he finds that he’s been replaced… By himself.

'The Witcher' Season 1

Who’s Involved?: Henry Cavill has already been cast as Geralt. The adaptation is being steered by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (The West Wing, Daredevil, The Defenders).

What We Know: Based on the novel series of the same name and the award-winning video game Witcher III, this fantasy epic follows the story of the monster hunter Geralt. When the warrior is tasked with taking care of a young girl, his dangerous life is permanently changed.

'Easy' Season 3

Who’s Involved?: We don’t know who will be in the third and final season of this romantic anthology series, but creator Joe Swanberg will definitely be behind the camera.

What We Know: This quiet series follows a handful of couples as they navigate the weird world of dating and relationships in Chicago. Easy was renewed for a third and final season in August of 2018, so there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing it sometime this year.

'Central Park Five'

Who’s Involved?: Ava DuVernay is the creator, director, and writer of this upcoming miniseries. Vera Farmiga and Joshua Jackson are already set to star.

What We Know: From the director of Selma comes a dramatic miniseries about one of the most controversial cases in modern history. In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem were arrested for raping a white woman. Central Park Five explores what led to those false arrests.
