New Movies on Demand: ‘Bad Times at the El Royale,’ ‘Love Gilda,’ ‘The Old Man & The Gun,’ and More

New year, new movies! Start 2019 off the right way by squeezing in a few more of 2018’s last new releases, or the films you missed in theaters a few months ago. Winter vacation is over, but the weekend is right around the corner! Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover.

As of this week, you can finally rent Bad Times at the El Royale for a fraction of its full price. The action thriller stars a killer ensemble of killers (Jon Hamm, Chris Hemsworth) and makes for perfect Friday night viewing. Elsewhere in the VOD landscape, you can now purchase the drama Wildlife starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Carrie Mulligan and directed by Paul Dano. The period piece follows the struggles of a couple trying to make enough money to get by in 1960. If you want something edgier, you can always watch the documentary Bad Reputation which chronicles the career of Joan Jett, from her days in the Runaways to her ’80s rock stardom.

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of acclaimed documentaries, moving dramas, and sci-fi action films now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

Love, Gilda

Original Saturday Night Live cast member Gilda Radner inspired generations of comedians with her go-for-broke style and bright, fearless smile. This acclaimed documentary allows Radner, who passed away in 1989, to tell her own story via diary entries and various video and audio recordings. The film also interviews her peers Laraine Newman and Chevy Chase as well as the modern legends she inspired, like Amy Poehler and Melissa McCarthy. This one’s a must watch for SNL fans old and new, and you can rent it right now.

The Old Man and the Gun

Possibly Robert Redford’s final acting role, The Old Man and the Gun tells the true story of a septuagenarian con man who busts out of jail and goes on a series of heists that totally baffle the law enforcement officers tailing him. The movie, which earned rave reviews and earned Redford a Golden Globe nomination, also stars Sissy Spacek as the woman who sticks by the criminal’s side. If this sounds up your alley but you want to wait and rent it, you’ll be able to do that on January 15.

$0.99 iTunes Movie Rental

Eighth Grade

If ever there was a movie worth a $0.99 rental, it’s Bo Burnham’s unflinching ode to middle school awkwardness. But don’t take my word for it! Here’s what Decider’s Joe Reid had to say:

There is something universally recognizable in Kayla, the vlog-making, dad-ignoring, friendship-starved tween played with sometimes-excruciating open-heartedness by Elsie Fisher. It’s often heartbreaking watching Kayla stumble, but as she soldiers on, holding onto the hope that she’ll one day live up to the girl in her vlogs, it’s impossible not to have your heart swell for her.

If you miss this $0.99 rental window, don’t worry! Eighth Grade will be available to stream on Amazon’s Prime Video starting on January 13.
