Lady Gaga Honors Judy Garland’s ‘Star Is Born’ Look with Golden Globes Gown

Lady Gaga knows how to pull off a show-stopping fashion moment, but her gorgeous periwinkle gown at the 2019 Golden Globes has a deeper meaning than you might think. Lady Gaga’s over-the-top gorgeous blueish-lavender Valentino Haute Couture gown isn’t just a nod to the opulence of old Hollywood, but an homage to another A Star is Born leading lady: Judy Garland.

Lady Gaga is nominated for a Golden Globe tonight for her critically-acclaimed role in Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star is Born. Though the film has been remade many times before, the most iconic version stars James Mason as Hollywood leading man Norman Maine and Judy Garland as small town girl Esther Blodgett who reinvents herself as the glamorous Vicki Lester just as her husband Norman’s career declines. During the film, Garland sports a sensational soft blue gown along with a slightly darker blue shrug, and indigo gloves. Lady Gaga’s look is an obvious, if not also modern, nod to the ultra-glam look.

If Lady Gaga wins for A Star is Born tonight, it will be her second Golden Globe award. In 2016 she won for her performance in the Limited Series, American Horror Story: Hotel. Gaga is also nominated for writing the song “Shallow” for A Star is Born.
