Jodie Whittaker’s ‘Adult Life Skills’ on VOD is an Adorable Exploration of Grief

There have been countless attempts at portraying grief in films, but it likely that there is no more adorable exploration of that human emotion than in Adult Life Skills, now available on VOD. Doctor Who‘s Jodie Whittaker stars as Anna, a woman counting down the days until her 30th birthday while living in the shed behind the house where her mother and grandmother live in the English countryside, keeping herself busy by making the cutest “thumbs in space” videos you ever did see.

When it is firmly suggested that this woman, one who has surely been described as having “an active imagination” many times in her life, get out and find herself a boyfriend, a new place to live or an adventure (ideally all three?), you can imagine that her reaction is less than enthusiastic.

You see, she’s also experiencing quite a wave of grief due to a recent and significant loss, and when tasked with the duty of looking after a young neighbor, Clint (Ozzy Myers) while his sick mom is in the hospital, well, some interesting things in the form of personal introspection start to take place, as they do in these types of delightful films. Adult Life Skills garnered buzz back at the 2016 Tribeca Film Fest but there is perhaps no better place to watch this sweet, dreamy indie flick than your own couch (or blanket fort, no judgment here), especially now that you can (and should).

Written and directed by Rachel Tunnard, this film does a brilliant job capturing that specific moment in time when you’re clinging to just a little bit more fun before succumbing to adulthood, of course, without realizing you maybe already have. Whittaker will have you wanting to be her BFF, Myers will break your heart with his many hopeful glances and cowboy ambitions, and Brett Goldstein as Anna’s sneaky admirer Brendan is the ideal movie crush. If the thought of updating your resume or creating a vision board or even really cleaning up your living space is all too much, take a moment to watch someone else pick up some adult life skills with this movie that just might sneak up and motivate you — or at least put a big ol’ smile on your face.
