New Movies on Demand: ‘A Star Is Born,’ ‘Suspiria,’ ‘Halloween,’ and More

It’s Friday and you know the score: the work week is over and you’ve got a few days of freedom coming your way. You can sleep in, indulge your cheat day with a whole cake, or maybe get some time with your equally over-extended family. You know what’s a great way to hang out with the people you care about while also stuffing your face with snacks? Renting a movie! Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover.
In the mood for a good scare? You’re in luck, because the 2018 Halloween sequel/reboot is now available to stream for the weekend at a slashed price. The movie, which brought Jamie Lee Curtis back to the franchise, is finally available to rent. If you’re in the mood for a totally different kind of horror movie, one of the psychological kind, you can purchase the drama Boy Erased. The film stars Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as the parents of a gay son (Lucas Hedges) who they send to a gay conversion therapy camp. Okay, this isn’t a horror horror film, but anything involving gay conversion therapy is bound to be an upsetting watch. The critically-acclaimed film is based on a memoir from Garrard Conley, and it was directed and written by actor-turned-sudden-auteur Joel Edgerton.
What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of musical dramas, tense thrillers, and family friendly frightfests now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

A Star Is Born

Obviously this is the major star of this weekend’s VOD options. The Bradley Cooper-directed update of A Star Is Born, a tale nearly as old as the film medium itself, includes a star-making performance from pop icon Lady Gaga as well as original songs that will resonate with you long after the end credits roll. You’ll have to wait until February 19 if you just want to spend the weekend with Bradley and Lady by renting the movie. Or, you know, you can give into the hype and acclaim and just pay full price for it now!

Suspiria

Luca Guadagnino followed up his acclaimed Call Me by Your Name with a completely unexpected turn into psychological and supernatural horror. Suspiria, inspired by the original horror masterpiece by Dario Argento, tells the tale of a young American dancer (Dakota Johnson) who enrolls in a dance academy in Berlin–an academy that’s run by a coven of witches. How do you know they’re witches? Because they’re spearheaded by Tilda Swinton, and she is incapable of playing characters that aren’t witches. The film received polarized reviews, reviews that almost unanimously praised the film’s horrific intensity, but were split when it came to the film’s methodical pacing (152 minutes, wow!). Is Suspiria right for you? Maybe wait until you can rent it on January 29 to find out.

A Star Is Born

If you are dying to see the birth of a star but don’t have the dollars to pay full price for the Cooper/Gaga one, might I interest you in one of the others? You can rent the Barbra Streisand version and the Judy Garland version for just $0.99 each. All that drama, music, hair, and glamour for just $1.98? That sounds like a deal to me! And if you want to make it a triple feature, you can also rent the 1937 original for the low(er than normal) price of $2.99.
