New Movies on Demand: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web,’ ‘Widows,’ and More

Buh-bye workweek, we never loved you anyway! Hello weekend, are you ready to rock and roll? Turn off your phone, close your email, and toss your iPad in the garbage (okay, don’t actually do that). Get all the way unplugged and unwind with a real treat: new movies! The weekend is the perfect time to catch up with all the movies you missed (as well as some new movies debuting directly on VOD). Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover.
After winning over audiences and Golden Globes voters, the now Oscar-nominated Bohemian Rhapsody is available to purchase digitally. Rami Malek stars as Freddie Mercury in a rock and roll biopic for the ages, especially now that we’re in Academy Awards season. You can buy the film now, but you’ll have to wait until February 12 if you want to just rent it. On the rental front, you can now watch another biopic, First Man, at home for a fraction of the cost of a movie ticket. Ryan Gosling stars as Neil Armstrong in this film from La La Land director Damien Chazelle.
What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of tense thrillers, action flicks, and seasonal family hits now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

The Girl in the Spider’s Web

If you want to make it a Claire Foy weekend, you can watch her in ’60s attire as Neil Armstrong’s wife Janet in First Man and then see her play a completely different woman in the crime thriller The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Foy takes over the role of Lisbeth Salander from Rooney Mara, who played the hacker in 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The film also marks a shift in the hit Swedish crime series as it is the first film to be based on a book not written by initial author Stieg Larsson. If you’re a diehard fan of the Millennium novel series, then you can keep your digital collection going by purchasing this film right now. If you’re just curious, you’ll be able to rent it on February 5.

Widows

Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen delivered a sizzling heist film last year with an all-star ensemble cast. Viola Davis heads up the cast of mob widows, a roster that includes Michelle Rodriguez and Elizabeth Debicki. After their husbands get whacked, these widows team up to pull off a heist in order to pay back a crime boss. The film and its cast earned rave reviews, particularly the always fantastic Viola Davis. If you’re looking for a real Saturday night thrill ride, most likely one you missed in theaters, buy Widows. And if you want to hold off and rent it, it becomes available to rent on February 5.

Hotel Artemis

After streaming Girl in the Spider’s Web and Widows, why not keep the gritty crime vibes alive by renting another action-packed thriller from 2018? Hotel Artemis takes place in an underground hospital for criminals in a bleak future. The film stars basically everyone: Jodie Foster, Sterling K. Brown, Sofia Boutella, Jeff Goldblum, Bryan Tyree Henry (who’s also in Widows), Jenny Slate, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Day, Dave Bautista…. should I keep going? Maybe it’s not the best movie around, but it’s got plenty of over-the-top action that makes it well worth spending a dollar on!
