Is ‘Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile’ Headed To Netflix?

With the Sundance Film Festival currently in full swing up in Park City, Utah, those of us following rabidly down here at sea level have been perked up by the news of Zac Efron playing serial killer Ted Bundy in a film called Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. Efron in particular has been the talk of the festival for his performance.

The biggest question when it comes to the movie, however, has been how and when are the rest of us going to see it. Is Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile headed to Netflix, or to a theater near you? Is Amazon or Hulu hovering? Maybe an A24 or a Neon, two studios which have been making big indie moves lately.

Netflix has just purchased the distribution rights to Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile for a reported $9 million. Aside from premiering a few of their own original films at Sundance — including the Jake Gyllenhaal-starring art-world horror flick Velvet Buzzsaw — Netflix hasn’t been as active in purchasing Sundance films as they have been in past years, making the Extremely Wicked acquisition one of the streamer’s highest-profile moves of the festival.

If you’re wondering why the Ted Bundy movie is seen as a good fit for Netflix, it’s probably because Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes are newly streaming on Netflix and helping to create a kind of dark cultural revival for the deceased serial killer. So much of a moment, in fact, that Netflix’s social media team has had to remind people that openly thirsting after a famous serial killer of women is not a great look.

Now that Netflix has snatched up our murderous Zac Efron, a few quickly answered questions:
