‘Personal Shopper’: Kristen Stewart’s Post-‘Twilight’ Indie Darling Is Now on Netflix

This month, Netflix has once again added dozens of movies and TV shows to its already-vast library. February’s top-rated offerings include Oscar-nominated films like Jaws, Jack Nicholson’s As Good As It Gets, and Billy Elliot, as well as crowd-pleasers including Hairspray (the 2007 remake), The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and The Edge of Seventeen. But among all these big-time names, there’s one film you probably haven’t heard of: Personal Shopper, a 2016 indie from Olivier Assayas. The film currently holds an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, but more importantly, it showcases the talent of Kristen Stewart, an actress who is so much more interesting than the Twilight saga ever allowed her to be.

In Personal Shopper, Stewart plays Maureen, an American living in Paris who works an assistant and personal shopper for a wealthy celebrity. A few months prior, Maureen’s twin brother, Lewis, died from a heart valve abnormality, and she’s still grieving over his passing. Both Maureen and her brother were spiritual mediums, so naturally, she tries to contact him from beyond the grave. Soon, she begins experiencing supernatural phenomena that could be attributed to her brother… or could they be something (or someone) else entirely?

As Maureen attempts to connect with her brother’s spirit, she becomes embroiled in a much more tangible mystery involving her boss. No matter whether she’s dealing with the real world or the supernatural, it seems that there’s nowhere safe for Stewart’s unconventional character.

Like her other indie film appearances, Personal Shopper marked Stewart’s concerted effort to break away from the Twilight franchise, and it worked. In his initial review for Decider, Joe Reid praised Stewart’s performance, calling her “a capital ‘S’ star.” He continued, “Stewart commands the screen like few actresses in her demographic are able to do.” Add in supernatural elements and a thrilling murder plot and you have an indie gem truly deserving of your time.

Personal Shopper is now streaming on Netflix.
