Cardi B As Selena On Netflix? Sorry, It’s Not Happening

It turns out that not everyone wants to party with Cardi. This weekend, a fake promo for Netflix’s Selena: The Series went viral, and fans of the iconic singer weren’t too happy to see Cardi B pictured in the lead role. Admittedly, the image is pretty convincing: it features Netflix’s logo over a long-haired, hoop-earringed Cardi B, and the resemblance between her and Selena Quintanilla is pretty striking. So while we can’t really blame people for asking if Cardi B is playing Selena in Netflix’s new series, the answer is definitely no — for now, at least.

The Cardi B-Selena furor started on Friday, when a fake image promoting Netflix’s scripted Selena Quintanilla story began circulating on Twitter. Almost immediately, Selena fans began chiming in to say that the Grammy-winning rapper would be a bad choice for Netflix’s series, as her “trash ass” has nothing on “queen” Selena.

By the next day, a second wave of fans had reacted to the first, saying that everyone needs to chill out because the image is totally fake.

If you’re among the many users who promised to cancel their Netflix subscriptions over Cardi B’s starring role in Selena: The Series, you’re in luck. Apart from the fake promo, there’s no reason to believe that Cardi B is playing Selena in the new series. In fact, the streaming giant hasn’t released any casting info at all — as of now, the Selena Netflix series cast is being kept under wraps, so save your outrage for when the real Selena is announced.

While we may not know who will star in Netflix’s Selena: The Series, we do know a few things about the drama. The series has been described as a “coming of age story following Selena as her dreams come true and all the heart-wrenching and life-changing choices she and her family have to make as they navigate success, family, and music.” Selena’s family, including Suzette Quintanilla, her sister, and Abraham Quintanilla Jr., her father, have signed on to produce alongside Moisés Zamora, Jaime Dávila, and Rico Martinez.

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” said Suzette Quintanilla when the news was first released. “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”
