‘Aladdin’ Fans Rip Will Smith’s Very Blue Genie: “An Abomination”

Talk about Sunday Scaries. Last night during the Grammy Awards, Disney decided to horrify the entire world by debuting the first trailer for its live-action Aladdin. The trailer itself is fairly innocent until the final seconds, when Will Smith‘s very blue, very buff Genie makes his grand entrance and ruins everything Disney fans hold dear. Immediately after the minute-long spot dropped, users took to social media to share their thoughts, and you could say that Smith’s appearance left everyone feeling a little… blue.

Disney’s Aladdin trailer introduces viewers to the titular hero’s adventure and his wish-granting sidekick, the Genie. “You really don’t know who I am? Genie, wishes, lamp, none of that ringing a bell?” asks a CGI Smith (so much for a live-action Aladdin). Smith’s Blue Man Group cosplay had many fans scratching their heads, and they promptly took to Twitter to share their thoughts. None of which were positive.

Many fans directed their anger at Disney, which posted the trailer on its YouTube and Twitter pages. Both videos were hit with savage comments from fans, including those who felt the trailer was “awful and stilted,” and “an abomination.”

Disney’s YouTube page fared even worse. As of today, the official clip has 21,000 upvotes… and an equal number of downvotes. “It’s like I’m watching some Netflix trash,” commented one user. “I think this is the first Disney trailer I’ve ever disliked. Poor casting choice for Jafar and Jasmine. Genie looks really bad and too human, they should’ve went with a totally CGI Genie imo,” said another. “Legend says that Will Smith as the Genie is what you see at the gates of hell,” joked another user.

Aladdin hits theaters across the U.S. on Friday, May 24.
