Busy Philipps Says People Should Talk About Periods “All the F*cking Time”

Busy Philipps can’t be tamed — especially when it comes to talking about periods. On Monday night, the Busy Tonight host delivered a lengthy monologue about menstruation, saying that despite the taboo, everyone should talk about periods “all the fucking time” because “it’s wild.” Philipps went on to explain that while she enjoys Apple’s new period emoji, which was released alongside a sloth, garlic, and wheelchair emojis, among others, she’s worried it may “confuse men about what our periods are like,” as most are anything but “one cute drop” of blood.

“Well, we did it ladies. We got the period emoji. Feminism triumphed. We won!” said Philipps at the beginning of the bit. While she was “told not to start the show” with the emoji discussion (this was the second topic Philipps discussed in her opening monologue, so she obliged), she’s still in favor of being open about the topic. “I guess I talk about my period a lot. I bleed once a month, it’s happening right now. I don’t know what to tell you,” said Philipps. “If this show continues, I’m going to keep talking about bleeding when I’m bleeding. It’s one of the craziest things that my body does. And it only does it for a period of time and then it just goes away. It’s wild. And we all should talk about it all the fucking time.”

Philipps went on to say that she doesn’t know “why it’s taken so long for this emoji,” but she’s here for the new additions, which include people in wheelchairs, sloths — “that’s for Kristen Bell only,” she said — garlic, and, of course, the period emoji. “I do worry it’s going to confuse men about what our periods are like, because FYI: it’s not like one cute drop,” she joked. “If they really wanted to make it accurate, they should’ve turned that giant rave one red.”

Jokes aside, Philipps believes that Apple’s emoji is “pretty important considering commercials about periods won’t even say ‘vagina’ or show red fluid. It’s always blue or green fluid.” All that weirdly colored fluid has the potential to be very misleading. “Ladies, I just want to tell you this,” she concluded, “If blue or green fluid is coming out of you, you’re real sick. You need to go to the hospital right now.”
