There are a slew of upcoming Hulu programs we’re excited about. Aidy Bryant’s Shrill looks sensational; the platform’s Catch-22 miniseries stars Christopher Abbott, Kyle Chandler, and George Clooney so umm, yeah, we’re definitely in on that one; and we’re even being gifted a new season of Veronica Mars! But perhaps Hulu’s most intriguing new show explores one of the craziest real-life stories in recent memory.
Premiering later this year, Hulu’s anthology series The Act may very well be your next true-crime obsession. What is The Act on Hulu about? When will this buzzy new series premiere? Here’s everything you need to know about the bizarre case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard.
IS HULU’S THE ACT BASED ON A TRUE STORY?

WHAT IS THE ACT ON HULU ABOUT?
The Act is an upcoming Hulu anthology series that focuses on stranger-than-fiction true crime stories. Season 1 follows the bizarre story of Gypsy Blanchard, a girl trying to escape the toxic, co-dependent relationship she has with her overprotective mother (Dee Dee Blanchard). As the Hulu press release notes, “her quest for independence opens a Pandora’s box of secrets, one that ultimately leads to murder.”
Season 1 of The Act is based on a 2016 BuzzFeed article titled “Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom Murdered.” The author of the article, Michelle Dean, serves as co-showrunner of the series with Nick Antosca. If this case seems familiar, the peculiar story of Dee Dee and Gypsy was also explored in HBO’s 2017 documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest.
The Act stars Patricia Arquette and Joey King as Dee Dee and Gypsy Blanchard, respectively. The series also features Chloe Sevigny, AnnaSophia Robb, and as our own Meghan O’Keefe reports, Margo Martindale.
WHAT IS MUNCHAUSEN SYNDROME BY PROXY?
The troubled relationship between Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard is complicated by Dee Dee allegedly having had Munchausen by proxy syndrome, a mental illness in which the caretaker of a child either makes up fake symptoms or causes real symptoms to make it look like the child is sick.
Murder, abuse, and betrayal converge in this macabre tale of a treacherous web of lies.
